There's that, but I think that there's also the hint of danger - for the guest cast, it's pretty much that they never know if their next appearance will be their last, so they're probably working to make one hell of an impression so that the fans will clamor for more of their character and they get to come back. Sam and Dean are in no danger of being killed off (unless the end of the show is them going off a cliff in the Metallicar in a hail of bullets, at which point, no show anyway).

Though, yeah, there's probably the fact that Sam and Dean have the same issues while the guest characters are able bring more of a variety to the table that's probably playing a big factor.
