[Batman/DC Comics]

Wait, I'm confused. Why wouldn't Steph count as one of the Robins? I haven't read the comics in a while and I'm even longer out of fandom, but she took on the role, right? And it wasn't a one off thing, it lasted for several issues? So why wouldn't she count as a Robin?

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Cause she has a vagina.

Jokes aside, some people don't count her as Robin because 1) Bruce was using her as bait for Tim, 2) her tenure as Robin was really short and 3) Batman only told her she was a real Robin because she was dying.

Personally, I don't care. She was Robin to me.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Uuuh, you can dislike her, but until it's retconned she is, in fact, a Robin. That's like saying you think there's only X number of Green Lanterns because there's a few you personally didn't think were worthy.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
She'll always be a Robin to me. It felt real to her, no matter how much Bruce shitted on her.

[identity profile] gertie-flirty.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand how she's NOT a Robin. She wore the costume, fought alongside Batman, and was tortured to "death" trying to prove she was good enough. If Jason Todd "counts," why not Steph?

oh right cuz she's a girl ewwwww

Count me as among those confused. Do really see Batman as someone who's happy to let people cosplay in the Batcave and around the city with him? Because if so, he's going to have a huge line of nerds waiting.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
But she was a Robin...

What part of being a Robin made her not a Robin?

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that I deny there were 5 issues that covered Stephanie being Robin leading up to War Games etc. It's that if DC or whoever says "the Robins" I think of the same people DC means when they say it. It's a different relationship to the role and to each other (and to Bruce). If someone says "the Batgirls" I think Babs, Cass and Steph.

Secret maker, if only Batman would not have had a secret contingency plan on his own computer!

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I count her as a Batgirl. That way there are just 4 Robins and 3 Batgirls and we don't have to use fractions or something to get the count right. Plus that way I can forget about her tenure as Robin and how much I hated it.

YEAH, WELL, I THINK YOU SUCK

kay not really. Your opinions are your own and you're free to em but seriously, I DO think that line of thinking is massively uncool.

No IA, I think the weird Robin purism is kind of dickish because they've all done important things under the mantle, and to discount ANY of them undermines the good that they've done, and that's not what being Robin is about.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well Damian doesn't exist in my world, so four's a good number.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you're in luck because they said that in the reboot there will only have been four Robin's (Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damien). This doesn't bother me in the slightest, considering the only thing we got from Stephanie's stint as Robin was the horrible War Games storyline, which (rightfully) deserves to be forgotten.

I view Steph-as-Robin the same as I view Helena-as-Batgirl: yes, they technically took on those mantles, but due to their prominance, tenure, and contributions in their other identities them taking up those particular identities are just footnotes that can be erased with no problem.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
NGL on merit of the story alone, I hated the Steph as Robin thing. But to pretend as though the only reason it's being ignored is out of merit of story alone is pretty naive. It'd be great if we could treat Steph as Robin arc as though it was just a random sidenote that didn't amount to much as Robin, and if we could treat female characters as though they had no contextual baggage, but that would mean we're living in a world without sexism, which isn't true yet.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Naive though it may be, I honestly do think that most of the opposition for Steph being Robin comes more from the way her arc was handled rather than the fact that she has a vagina. There was a female Robin in The Dark Knight Returns, and I believe she was well-received. IIRC the whole reason why Stephanie became Robin in the first place was because the higher-ups were already planning on killing her, and wanted her death to have more of an impact. So because of this, her time as Robin (to me, at least) feels artificial and forced and I can see why people might be hesitant to call her a "real Robin" (wtf does that mean, anyway?), even if I don't entirely agree.

I feel like people who say this don't realise just how short Jason's tenure as Robin was. He was introduced in Batman 408 and died in Batman 428. That's only 20 issues! And yet people still count him as an official Robin and dismiss Steph. Doesn't make sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, Jason had (and still has, to the other characters) a much greater impact as Robin than he will ever have as Red Hood. For Steph, she has a much greater impact as Batgirl and as Spoiler than she ever had as Robin (she wasn't even on Tim's shortlist for resucetion when they thought she was dead).

I'm not saying her time as Robin didn't exist, it's just fairly unimportant and uninteresting compared to everything else about her.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There were also about 20 issues of Detective Comics. That's 40 issues to Stephanie's five, and even those were forced by editorial in order to make Stephanie's eventual death-by-personal-failings more dramatic.

And I agree with the commenter above that Jason had a bigger impact as Robin (than both Steph as Robin and Jason as Red Hood) and certainly a much, much bigger impact as Robin that Stephanie did during her short tenure which was a ruse built around "putting her there" as opposed to Batman choosing Jason.

In the end, Batman and 'Tec are always all about Batman, and while Jason (as Robin, and certainly not as Red Hood) had an enormous and terrible impact on Batman, Stephanie absolutely did not have much to do with Batman at all. It was and has always been all about Stephanie, and her plot device of triggering the crossover epic War Games. And yet being Robin is all about "Robin"-ness (Stephanie doesn't cut it on that) and even moreso about "Batman". (Again, Stephanie just doesn't fit there.)
