There doesn't really have to be. But if the OP is surrounded by Harry Potter fans hailing Rowling as the greatest children's fantasy writer who ever put pen to paper (and I've met several who have and I can't roll my eyes hard enough at them), I can understand why they might be a little miffed. The books were really, really mediocre. They just had very clever marketing.

The HP books may be more simplistic linguistically and thematically, but mediocre they're not, and they make up for it in popular appeal. JKR caught lightning in a bottle when it came to pageturner mystery plots, fanbaseable cast of characters, and compelling overarching story, no matter how butthurt that may make us. Not mediocre.

The Hunger Games is, IMO, an example of a mediocre book series. But Harry Potter is a classic series and pretty damn good popular fiction.

Your opinion, man. I thought they were mediocre at best and still can't understand all the ridiculous hype that surrounds them unless I chalk it up to some geniuses in the marketing department.
