For me, I had enough faith in them that the little shipping on the top was the only part of the finale I wouldn't be blown away by so it was the only part worth discussing. When I was disappointed in the finale, well part of it is that they set up the finale storytelling in a way that could have lead to it more naturally than the epilogue at the end so that was just a little insult to injury.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I...still don't understand the huge focus on shipping, though. And not just in Avatar fandom, but fandom as a whole. Why is everyone so obsessed over who is shacking up with whom? Though it's especially WTF in a series like Avatar, ehich has so much other stuff to get excited about. If you want shipping that badly, go read Harlequin or something, IDFK.

[identity profile] punishermax.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not, like, rabidly against shipping but when it overtakes the fandom and gets into rabid wars it becomes fucking idiotic.

Like, I personally thought Ginny was boring and thought their romance was kinda badly done, but I fucking ignored it because it was a little bump in the road of Harry fighting a god damn Evil Wizard.

[identity profile] animefantasyfan.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't even care that much (I always figured it would be HxHxR just for shits and giggles), but I just got so tired of Harry's character I just decided I didn't care anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I liked seeing the relationships grow, change, and be torn down at least as much as the fights. The scenery was great, the story (for the most part) was great, and the characters were some that I really related to and loved. I wanted them to get the ending they deserved.

The problem is that pretty much everyone would have liked to see Zuko find his mom, so if you bring it up, it's just sort of a dull agreement. If you bring up that you're unhappy with the pairings, suddenly there is something to disagree on.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
So...you're hung up on the shipping because the fandom fights like first-graders about it? I'm confused =/

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not hung up on shipping (repeatedly I said I would have been happy with well done Kataang), however, that's why it's a big issue in fandom. It largely comes down to personal preference so there will always be disagreement.

The most discussed issue isn't always the biggest one.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Um, just about any aspect of a given story is going to come down to personal preference of whether it works or doesn't work. What, again, makes shipping so goddamn special?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's where you're wrong. Not resolving Ursa was a legitimate slip up, same with Katara not using her water on Jet (though that was a smaller plot hole). Cinematography can be good or bad, same with editing, same with animation, foreshadowing etc. Now romance can be bad too, but it's a lot more of a personal preference between A and B than "hey, we never got resolution for this plot thread!"

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Um, no. All of the things you listed are 100% subjective. Unless you can point me to some kind of standardized test that the entire industry has drawn up to indicate what makes "good" and "bad" foreshadowing, cinematography, editing, storytelling, etc. When you're talking about analysis of a primarily visual art form, everything is subjective. That's the way art works.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever heard of the 180º rule? Or how to avoid jump cuts, etc? I mean, at some point if you know the rules you can break them, but generally speaking...

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Again, if you can break the "rules" (which are more like guidelines anyway) and get away with it, it is still subjective. "Objective" means there would have to be a black-and-white no-wiggle-room quantifiable way to determine if something is "good" or "bad." That's what objective means. When any manner of opinion is involved to determine "good" and "bad", you are dealing with something that is subjective. And since the quality of any piece of art is 100% opinion-based, it's subjective. Period. End.

Ergo, since every aspect of Avatar being good or bad is a matter of opinion, why the hell are people as hung up on shipping as they are?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
*headdesk* Do you really not see the difference?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, because there isn't one. You're making up a difference that isn't there to support an argument you know can't stand on its own.

[identity profile] punishermax.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like Anderson Cooper should be here interrupting people.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Super late to this little party because I wasn't around last night, but I love your comments and the random Anderson Cooper popping up in this thread. Kudos to you, my friend. Kudos.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
If you really can't see the difference, we have nothing to talk about here as you clearly have no idea what it's like to make a TV show or film of any kind.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
And you have no idea what it's like to make art of any kind, so I'm wondering what the hell you're trying to prove. Besides that you're totally not a butthurt Zutara shipper, no siree bob.

[identity profile] punishermax.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
And that's it for tonight's debate everyone. Tune in tomorrow when we discuss why Rainbow Dash obviously loves Fluttershy, why TRon 2.0 was better than Legacy and why no one read my fanfic.

Good Night and Good luck.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I burst out laughing. I am an artist! I'm trying to focus more and more on animation, so yeah, I do know what I'm talking about!

Just because a rule is only true 99% of the time, doesn't mean there are suddenly no standards!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
No, no you don't. And no, no you're not. However hard you're laughing, I'm laughing a hell of a lot harder, trust me. God, you shippers are precious. *headpat*

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
aw look it's the reason I hate the Avatar fandom all wrapped up in one condescending anon.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think I'm going to watch Korra and just not talk to anyone else about it, ever. For my sanity. Because damn.
