It's kind of hard to take you seriously, though, when in one breath you say shipping was the "least of your concerns", then turn around one comment later and say the relationships were a "major focus." Pick one, because it can't be both.

No, you're butthurt (and in denial of it) because you keep insisting that you're not all about the shipping, yet you can't decide if it was the "least of your concerns" or a primary focus. If the platonic relationships were truly important to you but not the shipping, you would have just said when asked about the shipping "no, I was more concerned with the character dynamics than who hooked up", not "the relationships were a primary focus for me, the platonic ones, too." You keep tripping over yourself and making it obvious that you aren't being honest when you're posting with your gut. I've seen the pattern in Zutara fen often enough to recognize it by now.

*sigh* Relationships are a large focus of the show, platonic and romantic. However, the people comprising those relationships were not. I would have been fine with Zuko and Aang bffs, I would have been fine with Katara and Aang hooking up and Mai and Zuko hooking up. My real complaint is that the relationships were not done well as relationships, regardless of who was in them.

However, if you want to keep ignoring it and claiming I'm the butthurt one, go ahead, have fun.

Then what were Zuko's daddy issues? The emphasis on the Gaang? Toph running away from home? Aang's people, the hope of the avatar? Those seem like pretty major elements to me.

They were about the singular characters themselves and their own motivations, not their relationships. Zuko's daddy issues were about him being a confused, stupid teenager who is desperate for validation. Toph running away from home was about her wanting to be taken seriously despite her disability. The emphasis on the Gaang was about what they were trying to accomplish. Aang's people was about how he felt guilty for being a petulant child and running away from what he didn't want to hear. And the hope of the Avatar is about saving the world.

What happened on screen is actually the complete opposite of your stated complaint. There was far more focus on the characters as individuals than there ever was on their relationships, be they platonic or romantic. And that's part of what made the series so unique among kids' shows: there was less Power of Friendship bullshit and more characters-growing-up-and-kicking-ass-on-their-own.

Just because you only see the relationships from one side doesn't mean it's not about relationships. Yes, it's different from other shows, but more in the fact that the relationships changed and moved and weren't equal. (e.g. Zuko care more about his relationship with Ozai than Ozai did.)

Also, seriously, Zuko and Iroh, what about that?

Well, you're tenacious in your butthurt defensiveness, I'll give you that. How much caffeine are you packing tonight?

*sigh* Ok, I'll try to use smaller words this time. Since the show depicts the relationships mostly from one side, that means the focus is not on the relationshiponly one of the characters in it. You need focus on two or more people to be a relationship.

Zuko and Iroh was one of the very, very few exceptions to this, where there was as much emphasis on their bond as on their individual characterization. Otherwise, there was far more focus on single characters than there ever was on their relationships. The relationships were just a means to an end -- that end being individual character development -- rather than the meat of the series.

I hate to break it to you, but there is no way you're going to win here. You won't change my mind, I won't change yours. And frankly, your insistence on not getting it is becoming pretty irritating (it was funny for about five minutes, but those have long since passed). I'll let you have the last word because it seems you can't live without it, and it's the only thing that will shut you up. But I'm still writing you off as the same butthurt, delusional Zutara shipper just like all the others.

I just think we're looking at it from different view points. Yes, it may be focusing on an individual, but I don't think that discounts that what changes the individual is a relationship. You think it does.

The difference here is that you're accusing me of being butthurt because of who was kissing who at the end and I'm saying that I was disappointed in the quality of the relationships in several instances. It was never a "live and let live" argument from your side.

I rather suspect that you're just disappointed I didn't bawl about how Katara and Zuko were perfect for each other and how you could never appreciate their love.

Having downed a sufficient amount of Tylenol and chamomile tea to get through this thread...you baaaaaawed plenty, just not about Zutara. And I'm inclined to agree with the other anon that you're a lot more disappointed by the shipping than you'll ever admit. They were being kind of an ass, but I can't really blame them for losing it when you were being that utterly thick.

But hey, it's two anons in an internet argument. Nobody really wins.

I was asked again and again if I would like the finale if it were Zutara and the answer was no with definite examples. What's butthurt about that? It's stating other problems that certainly wouldn't go away if the pairings were changed. Last time I checked that's keeping a more level head than not.

Also, you may have missed the part where I was planning a spin-off with a friend (pre-finale) and ended-up like Kataang in that better than Zutara. How does that fit in "butthurt about shipping?" Disappointed, sure, maybe a little, but much more disappointed by the way they handled the romantic relationships.
