And not a single fuck was given that day...

As J.K. Rowling continued to splash around in her money vault like Scrooge McDuck.

Well......

But at least this is an opportunity to get all the HP fans who are so quick to believe JK Rowling a) invented the fantasy/ya genres b) is the greatest author to ever live c) didn't borrow many of her ingenious ideas from other slightly less known authors or tropes of the genre.

(I like Harry Potter, btw. I started reading the books in '98 and think they are at least a little more decent than a lot of came after it.)

Yes. Even the story's premise was lifted nearly verbatim from Jane Yolen's Wizard's Hall. And sorry, but I think Yolen did a hell of a better job with one book than Rowling did with seven.

But did you like it before it was cool?

Unfortunately, it never was cool. I wish it had been.

Why do you think it never took off like HP? Not enough promotion? Genuinely curious here; also now that I'm done with ADwD I'd love recs.

I think it was because of the lack of promotion. Back in 1991 when Wizard's Hall was published, we didn't have the kind of viral marketing that goes on today. Internet was still on dialup and at that it was barely affordable for your average consumer. Digital cable hadn't even taken off yet. HP came out in 1998, when there were more ways and more opportunities to promote the heck out of it, and it worked.

Interesting. And a shame the former didn't come out earlier, then. Do you think it might also have had to do with setting it in a British boarding school, as well? Again I haven't read either, but from the wiki page Yolen is American, so I assume that wasn't the setting, which is exotic to American readers and nostalgic to many British ones.

Both books were set in a similar way. There wasn't much talk of the structure of the actual castle itself in Wizard's Hall, because it was a pretty short book and Yolen was packing as much story and character development as she could into a tiny, tiny space, but it was still a boarding-school-like environment.

Seconding the above anon, but I think the fact that HP is a series, while Wizard's Hall is a single, fairly short book is also a factor. Harry Potter had big gaps between installments, and that gave people opportunities to speculate and play around that you don't really get with more self-contained canons. WH could easily have made a bigger splash if it had come around in the age of internet fandom, but it still would probably have been more flavor-of-the-moment than an HP-level phenomenon, in the same way that you don't see many film fandoms with the same staying power as ongoing TV fandoms.

Which isn't to say that it isn't a great book, just that it's not the kind of canon that generates huge fandoms.
