But how much taste do kids really have? I haven't read any of these books, not even HP, but I read and loved Eddings and Jordan and Feist as a kid, and going back to read their books now as an adult I can barely stand them. Jordan ripped off absolutely everything he writes about and every one of his characters is the same dude or the same chick in a different package, Eddings has an original story but it's the only one he ever writes in all of his novels, and Feist is the Tom Clancy of the fantasy genre - his books are thinly-veiled Cold War allegories chock full of war porn. But did I know that is a kid? No, of course not. Kids are ignorant. If you liked something growing up, you might hate it now.

/ducks Eddings, Jordan, and Fei-- oh who am I kidding there aren't going to be Feist fans on Livejournal

Not all the time, though. There's plenty of stuff I liked as a kid that I go back and revisit now, and find I love it even more when I'm older and can appreciate all of the not-kid-friendly stuff that went over my head before.

True that. The second time through the Dune series I understood a lot more of it than the first, that's for sure. But being more aware is a double-edged sword; I can't even touch the Narnia books anymore.

Eight-year-old tomboy self: Yeah, that's what Susan gets for being a girly girl who likes girly things, being damned forever, because girly things suck.

Twenty-eight-year-old feminist self: Euuuuugh, way 2 misogyny, Lewis. Way 2 misogyny. No wonder you hated LotR.

I can't touch the Narnia books anymore because of all the heavy-handed religious allegory, but the misogyny and racism don't help (y helo thar, Muslim terrori--I mean Calormen!).

Lloyd Alexander's books are an example of the former, though. Especially the Westmark cycle. I've gone back and re-read them and now I'm catching exactly what was going on with the politics and war and people's revolution and I appreciate a lot more of the point he was making and how utterly screwed up and disturbed a lot of the characters were. LotR the same way. I first read it when I was ten, and it just gets better every time.

Well, that sounds awesome. I've got a 15 hour flight coming up next week and now I've got reading material! Thanks, anon. (I swear I get the best recs from f!s sometimes - as wanky as this comm can be, it's one of the reasons I keep coming back.)

I will say they're fast reads, though. It's pretty simple prose because they were intended for the 11-13 demo. But there's a lot of pretty dark stuff packed into it. Some decently dark stuff in Prydain (certain parts of Taran Wanderer and The Black Cauldron are still High Octane Nightmare Fuel to me). But Westmark really ups the ante in that regard. The second book in particular is terrifying even 10+ years later.
