I wish I could put together words for this...but...I can't. >|

They have lived in a pantheon of privilege their entire lives that separates them from relating to most of the "black experience" but it's naive and dangerous to assume they are completely immune.

Although, as with most satire, I believe their humor acknowledges that that way of thinking is so utterly wrong, and I love that their privilege and schtick helped pave the way for other, less affluent black men and women to break out and do more controversial comedy. They're not trying to deny that racism exists, like so many sitcoms in the past.

They did however make Jim Carrey famous. Which while I don't know if it has done anything negative to black people (other than once again giving mediocre roles that anyone, even a POC, could play to a skinny white guy), I'm pretty sure that's, while not "oh god absolutely terrible", not exactly anything to brag about.

They have lived in a pantheon of privilege their entire lives...

This sentence just makes me imagine them dressed in togas and lounging around on Mt. Olympus as gods.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's kinna why I kept it. I can just picture it.

And I am a little disturbed.

They did however make Jim Carrey famous.

I had no idea, omg, I owe so much to them.

*two of my favorite movies are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show, which need Carrey to survive*

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it was a little show called "In Living Color" *god I wish I had been aware of it during its time* Jim Carrey described himself as being "that white guy" in the cast.

and I rip on James, but truthfully I like a lot of his films too...
It's gentle, fun teasing.

White "bufoons" are okay, but black actors and writers should only ever write black characters to be noble and awesome, otherwise they are traitors to their race etc

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did this even come from?

Have you never seen someone complain about a weak female character before? I'm not saying that these two phenomena are exactly the same, but that it's harmful to perpetuate stereotypes, and it's demeaning to performers when the only damn roles of any visibility fit into certain tropes (the buffoon, the magical negro, etc).

Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Very true. Blacks have just as much right to play silly characters as whites do.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't forget Tyler Perry. There's a man who deserves some hate.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just because Tyler Perry is just awful. Awful.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh, my mom loves Tyler Perry movies. And, okay, I think there may have been one that I sort of liked and I can't remember which, but it was the one with the hot dude from CSI Miami (and also they're all basically kind of the same movie anyway so it's difficult for me to distinguish clearly).

I was gonna see. He's way worse, IMO. I totally agree with Spike Lee about him, which is annoying because I don't want to agree with Spike Lee about most things. But...really.
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

It's 2011, I didn't realize that the Wayans were even still doing anything relevant that warrants a secret. Is it suddenly 1995 again? I might as well make a secret about how annoying Chris Elliott is, damn

Damon Wayans Jr. is on "Happy Endings" and he's actually pretty funny, but he's the only Wayans I can name off the top of my head that's still acting. I think the rest are producing/writing/ect, but I don't know for sure. But seriously, it's a few too many years after "White Chicks" for this.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Damon Wayans Jr., is not a Wayans brother. He is the doppelganger son of a Wayans brother.

Yeah, same. I know Damon is still around, but when I saw this secret I was like......um when did we go back to 2004?

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It got my hopes up, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't one of them hold Mariah Carey's purse?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. A lot of their stuff has been crap, but having seen Dungeons and Dragons (dear God, how did that get made? He's basically Abu) and Dance Flick (with the sequence on 'always dignity'), I feel somewhat more sympathetic to what they're doing. When they do it well, it's pretty funny and clearly based on their experience.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss "In Living Color".

That is all.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
But... the only Wayans who's still really working is Damon Jr., and his character on Happy Endings isn't like that at all.

Also, without Damon Sr., there wouldn't have been Bamboozled, which was an excellent skewering of black buffoonery in sitcoms.

Who are these guys and what did they do that was so terrible? *does not watch tv very much*

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm concerned, the guys behind "In Living Color" can do what ever the hell they want.

Fucking geniuses.
