I thought the main problem most people had with her voice was the fact that sometimes she had an aussie accent and sometimes she didn't? Granted I haven't really talked to anyone specifically about that but that was the impression I got.

Personally, I liked that. Especially considering the voice actress is australian herself.

Different anon. I personally still think it's a sign of mediocre-to-poor acting if someone can't maintain a consistent accent, whether the character has the same one or not. The actress may have a patchy accent IRL, but that shouldn't necessarily apply to the character.

It's not like I expect VAs to manage on the level of say, Hugh Laurie (first actor that popped into my head), but the whole 'but her accent really sounds like that!' has been pulled out so much that it's become a bit silly.

I agree with the OP on the whole, though. I watched a friend play this and Dissidia and couldn't decide if a scene with dub!Yuna was worse than another scene with Lightning.

Oh, but I just thought of actors like Sean Connery and how they're specifically hired and get away with keeping their accent. I guess that files under the excuse of being a badass or something.

But there's a difference between an actor using their original accent, and an actor who can't keep their accent consistent. Vanille's was the latter. Her Aussie accent kept disappearing every now and then. Which makes no sense considering the actress is Australian. I have no idea what the casting director was telling her to do, but whatever it was, it was an inconsistent mess.

I definitely agree--I just belatedly realized some people might have come back with a Sean Connery-esque example as a counterargument, and had no honest answer for it. Sorry I was unclear about my addendum.

Whilst the Va is an Aussie she's also been in the us for at least ten years irc. Accents mutate if not constantly reinforced. That's why it sounds inconsistent.

That was my problem with Vanille's voice, yes. But I just found Vanille to be a terrible character over all so I might be a bit biased. Lightning I found boring, so I can see where the OP is coming from with that.

I actually found Vanille's voice cute. Inconsistent yes, but it doesn't bother me that much. Didn't care too much for Lightning's, it didn't catch my ears. I like Fang'c voice the most though. Hee~

After finding out the back story of Vanille, I am glad that they hired someone who can't keep a consistent accent. The entire point of her character is that she's trying to pass something off that isn't truly hers and she kinda sucked at it, so.

Very appropriate IMO.
