I think there are some canons that have a lot of potential, but the authors didn't have the experience/talent to make them work. A good idea with poor execution, you know? So I think that type of compliment applies sometimes.

Other times it's just a matter of opinion. maybe the reader perceives errors in the original story that don't register with you, or they simply have a different preference. Other times it's just something people say, but it's still a compliment :)

I agree so much with the first part of this comment. Half of the shows or stories I came to hate so much could have been so much better with a different author, director or what have you. Icon very related.
