Why is it insulting? Authors are perfectly capable of screwing up their own characters/stories. I can name a few fandoms where the fanfics are better than the canon.

Me too. Came here to say this, actually. Especially with a long series, characterization can start to deteriorate after a point because they have to change what a character would do to keep the plot going. Just look at all the "The Plot Demanded This" tropes on TvTropes.

Even if they don't screw it up, there's always fanfic that goes for a different genre, too. Like darkfic for Homestuck and Hetalia, or the occasional slice-of-life comedic HP fic, or long fluffy romance fics for action-adventure anime... And that's not a defined 'better than' but it's definitely a point of difference where it's not unwarranted for the audience to like it better.
