(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)The thing about books and shows is that characters are often there to serve a specific purpose, to do something for the plot. The stupid ball that gets passed around, so that someone else can conveniently info dump? Sometimes you have to pass that ball to a character who isn't actually stupid. So they act out of character for the sake of the story. That was just an example but there are a lot of times when characterization sometimes has to be pushed and twisted a little for the sake of the plot.
Fanfic writers don't have to worry about that cause usually fics are character-studys with a flimsy plot as an excuse to explore a certain aspect of the universe we like. We can lovingly and indulgently write 10 paragraph short fics about why Character A decides to buy coffee with cream and not have to worry about it going anywhere. So, it can result in fics that explore things in a way that canon does not have time or logistics to do. Which can be good and bad!
Anyway, I'd just take it to mean that they enjoyed how you highlighted that aspect of canon.
