He continued to act as a Death Eater under Dumbledore's orders. He was following Dumbledore's plan not because he believed in that Harry would be able to kill Voldemort, but because Dumbledore was continuing to hold Lily's death over his head. Dumbledore was very blatantly using Lily's memory to manipulate Snape, and Snape knew it, and allowed it, because he was so tortured over the death of a girl he had a crush on when they were children.

I mean, this is canon. This is the very, very pathetic canon of Snape's life.

No, I get that. But there was the span of a few years between Snape initially becoming a Death Eater and when he overheard Trewlawney's prophecy. There was a loyalty to Voldemort, no matter how much out of cowardice it eventually began to be based on. It was not always completely 100% nonstop about Lily in his earlier years. Between the "Mudblood" incident and becoming a double agent, Snape lived his life based on his own poor choices.

I'm talking about the very small number of years where there is a gap in the canon.

Well I was mostly talking about after her death, hence the "everything after age 17" which I should amend to 21, I thought the Potters died at 17 for some reason. ANYWAY, my whole point is that Snape always lived his life based on his own poor choices. He allowed himself to be manipulated by Lily's memory. Lily was probably pretty grossed out in heaven I bet.

I've met a few people who argue that he made a lot of those terrible choices because he was upset about Lily breaking off their friendship. And then he started acting in what he believed was her best interest when he realized she was in legitimate danger.

I would agree that it could have been trauma from the end of his friendship with Lily that caused him to be a Death Eater, except that a huge part of the reason they started fighting in the first place was because he was hanging out with other future Death Eaters. Lily hated where he was going in life, but he just kept going.

Ohhh, right! I totally forgot about that bit.

I guess it's still possible he took the final plunge and became an actual Death Eater as a big fuck you to Lily, but that theory does make less sense now.

I'm going to say this because I think Dumbledore was the second-biggest douche in the entire series, and the only reason he is in the number two spot is because it's pretty damn hard to beat wizarding Hitler --

Even if Snape had tried to move freaking on after Lily died or even tried to, Dumbledore would have put the kabosh on that right away. Lily was the only thing Dumbledore had to manipulate Snape with, and he did it pretty damn shamelessly. If Snape moved on or became a whole person (like Harry) he wouldn't have been as controllable.

Both of them were so well-programmed by the time Dumbledore was through that neither of them even tried to come up with their own plan -- one that didn't end in them dying. Dumbledore even made certain that every time he presented Snape's motives to Harry, he did so in the way that made Snape look the worst -- thus making sure Harry never mellowed enough to Snape not to be flaming jackass to the man. Can't have his pawns allying with each other, now can we? They're so much easier to control alone.

Secondly, given what we know of Voldemort and Slyths in general, it is entirely possible that Lily was the only person in Snape's life who wasn't only nice to him because she wanted something from him. Like Raistlin and Bupu in DragonLance, that's going to make a distinct impression.
