getting pissed off at her for moving on and marrying james as if he has any right to have a say about her personal/love life is hella entitled js.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh course he's gonna be jealous of Lily hooking up with his nemesis.

There's a difference between being jealous and being entitled, btw. If he had corned Lily and told her that it was he and not James that deserved her, then yes, that would be entitlement. But he does nothing of the sort.

Severus does not hate Lily for marrying James. He hates James, yes. But he mainly hates himself for ruining their friendship, and ruining what might have been his only shot at love.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
he very clearly does think that james doesn't deserve her and that the only person who can truly protect lily is himself.

the fact that he never confronted her about it has more to do with his own inability to talk to lily or think about lily like she's an actual person (as opposed to either idealizing her or horribly putting her down) than it does with any particularly redeeming character traits.

+1

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree with the fact that he loathes James for being with her, but I hardly think that he feels like "he's the only person that can truly protect Lily". They break off contact after Snape calls her a Mudblood. He probably thinks he's no more fit than James to love her, for calling her such a horrible thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but actually you're wrong

in the book he goes and like threatens to sleep outside gryffindor tower to get her to talk to him after he calls her a mudblood. which is entitled in and over itself, she doesn't owe him the time of day especially after that

and she's like fuck you you're an asshole and he's like wahhhhhhh i didn't mean it take me back

so nah, he's p entitled

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wanting her forgiveness is "being entitled"? He realizes he acted like an asshole, so he wants to apologize to her. She refuses (which is completely understandable) saying he's too far gone. After that they stop talking.

He almost sleeps outside the common room because he's afraid of losing the person who was up till now, his only friend. Creepy? Sure. Desperate? Yeah. But the word "entitled" does not come to mind.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Just adding: I think "entitlement" is the wrong word you're looking for. Few of us go asking for forgiveness feeling we deserve it, feeling entitled to it.
We do it because it is the only thing we can do since turning back time and righting our mistakes is not an option.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
great, "few of us" feel entitled to forgiveness. "few of us" would also call our best friends a racial slur and then get pissed when called out on it. snape isn't you. don't project.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Pissed"? He regretted that single moment for his entire life. There's a reason why that chapter is called "Snape's Worst Memory".

I won't project as long as you don't make stuff up about characters.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
He was angry with himself and at her. People regret anger. Do you never regret moments where you were angry? I don't think saying that Snape resented Lily's criticism of his lifestyle choices is "[making] stuff up".

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He felt entitled to her forgiveness.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Did you even read the post above yours?

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
He was entitled because he assumed his desire to see her was more important than her denial. Wanting forgiveness is right, but when someone doesn't want to see you, you don't try to force them. That isn't okay. That is entitled.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, so we're getting down to different interpretations then. You see that scene as entitled where I see it as desperate. That's fine then, there's not much to argue about if we're getting into our own personal opinions about character motivation.

[identity profile] fawned.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Do you feel that desperation and entitlement are mutually exclusive?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
oh hai jkr i didn't realize you were on lj! i mean, you must be jkr with the way you're talking about this scenario as if you personally know every detail and nuance.

also be less obvious that it's you when you go anonymous, makes you look like less of a loser.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
whaaaa

i want details

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
XD you're wrong, assbutt.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just trying to have a civil debate. I'm not acting like an immature troll, so why would I bother going anonymous?

The person above me said something I disagreed with. I responded, asking why they thought that. They responded giving their reasons. And so on and so on. That's how a conversation works.

It's not that hard of a concept.
