It doesn't have anything to do with American sex ed. A lot of women with frequent UTIs have realized that sex tends to trigger infections for them. If you're not a chronic sufferer of UTIs I don't think it's something you think of a lot.

...but something that is a legitimate health concern regarding sex, whether it is super common or rather uncommon should be something that is *mentioned* no?

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Bear in mind that a lot of states' sex-ed curricula don't even explain about cervical changes over the course of a girl's cycle, and that's something that doesn't even have to do with intercourse, necessarily. Although DON'T HAVE SEX, YOU'LL GET A UTI seems like it would be in character for most health textbooks I've read.

(Some days I hate my State Board of Education.)

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Not health, thank goodness. I don't think I could live with myself if I had to teach the state curriculum out of the state-adopted textbooks for that subject, not least because the SBOE adopted textbooks that don't cover the entire curriculum. X-{

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think I could teach that either. :(
At the moment I'm in college, majoring in special education. Glad no one's been dissing my choice so far and not saying things like, "Oh, your pay will be crap". I. DON'T. CARE! I care about job security and passion than the pay. And even then, the pay seems pretty decent.

So I'm curious, what are you teaching? :D

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Secondary mathematics. They swapped up who's on what team this year, so I'm not 100% sure what my courseload will be when I land back at the school in a week, but last year I taught mostly Precal.

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's impressive! Math is one of the subjects not many people want to teach, right? :D
Personally, I always hated math so I admire those like you that love it enough to want to teach it. xD

I wish you the best.

What state do you live in? I'm in Texas and our board of education is pretty fucked up and managed to make itself into a gigantic joke after they wanted to make some idiotic textbook changes about a year ago (the Daily Show was pretty funny about it)

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, is that the state that wanted to write lies into history books? o.0

Good thing Kentucky or Indiana (the states I identify with...born and go to school in IN, raised in KY) haven't tried that shit...at least, I don't think they have. .___.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaah pretty much. They also wanted to omit certain things too :(

(I found that Daily Show clip I was talking about too: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-march-17-2010/don-t-mess-with-textbooks)

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ohh Jon Stewart. ♥
xD

SA

lmao never mind, I clicked on your profile and saw that you're also Texan. I feel your pain

Yeah, my boss's boss's bosses are complete idiots. X-[ And the governors keep nominating people who have no experience in education and no respect for, you know, things like accuracy and empathy.

The next time someone talks about "running schools like businesses" I will throw chalk at them. If that worked, there would be for-profit private schools that don't depend on sucking up and/or exploiting the kids that the regular system can't handle. Know why there aren't? Because education is not an inherently efficient process. The system we've got now is far, far from ideal, but it's better than any profit-based model tried so far. So what do the politicians who truly believe that 'government is the problem' do? They tear down teachers, make it impossible for principals to do their jobs, and defund the public schools, so they can claim that this near-universal government program "doesn't work." GRR ARRGH

Sorry, got off on a mini-rant there. Apologies for the extreme OT.
