It's not rare, in my experience. Especially in long-running series it happens very often, when characters are made to act OOC because it's necessary for the plot.

We may run in very different fandoms then. I have definitely followed a couple series that I felt portrayed their characters inconsistently, but I also think there's a tendency for fandom to just not like when one of their favorite characters changes or has periods of weakness and prefers to go with the idea that the fanon perception is truer than canon.

Seriously, though, I hear you. It's like shows/franchises owned by CBS have an autopoint built into them where they reach critical mass and Just Get Weird.
