Sometimes canon has promising ideas or threads of possibility that aren't explored. If they're what someone loves about canon, and you explored that stuff where the author didn't, why shouldn't they fall in love with your work?
Opinions vary, but I've never been a fan of the idea that fanfic is supposed to be a slavish remake of canon. The whole reason I feel inspired to write fanfic at all is to write about the ideas I get using canon as a springboard. Not everyone is like me, no, but many are. Maybe someone thought you were too, OP, and just misunderstood what kind of fanwriter you strive to be.
