Uh, calling interpersonal relationship fic "girl" fanfic is kind of gender stereotyping, and a plot can come as much from people's feelings about each other as from stuff blowing up. If things happen that cause more things to happen, and so on up until some kind of resolution, that's a plot. And a good plot can come from a romance story just as much as it can come from an action story.

But I actually agree with you about pairing fic and friendship- unless everyone in the story is paired up and they only interact with their significant others (which is terrible writing), there IS a lot of friendship stuff in most shipfic.

It's observational. Just as most girl-centric porn tends to focus on relationships (in the most basic sense of the word; the interplay of the two people fucking) and most boy-centric porn tends to focus on naked body parts, more boy-centric fanfic, written by boys, tends to trend to stuff blowing up and epic battles and more girl-centric fanfic, written by girls, tends to trend to character interplay and OTPs. Pointing out a trend is not gender stereotyping. And the best fanfic hits the happy medium of both, IMO (as does the best porn).

This reminds me of those lovely people in fandom who insist on swapping sexual positions in m/m fic getting angry when it's pointed out that a lot of gay men do, in fact, consider themselves exclusive tops or exclusive bottoms. Because it SHOULDN'T BE, that makes pointing out that it IS somehow wrong.

Uh, what? I'm not saying that women don't write relationship stories and men don't write action. (Hell, I'm a girl and I prefer romance or friendship stories to action, a lot.) From what I've seen, I've agreed that it's a trend, and... uh, I don't know where you're going with the m/m sexual position thing, because I already KNOW that some gay men don't switch. And I don't think switching or not switching is a problem at all, as long as the roles in the story comes from who the characters are and what the author imagines they'd like, not from stereotypes about what roles gay men always have. So... I don't know where you are getting this.

What I was trying to say is that there's nothing essentially female about writing romance, or essentially male about writing action. People of all genders write all kinds of stories. Just because more women do thing A and more men do thing B doesn't mean that thing A is just for women and thing B is just for men. That kinda demeans people who do like the things that are popular with their gender ("lol, they're just being women") and tells people who don't like stuff popular with their gender that they're being a [whatever their gender is] wrong.
