I like Snape as a character and I pitied him for him unrequited love but only because it made Snapes life seem so miserable. When I read the 7th book my mom thought it was sweet but I was just feeling stalker vibes.

IMO, Snape should not have felt that Lily was the ONLY person in the whole wide world that he needed in order to feel happy. Sure, he might have been an awkward boy but to be so dependent on one person is just a recipe for disaster.

It's been awhile since I read the books but IIRC Snape is the one who insulted Lily and ended their friendship. In all those years Snape was watching Lily while she was still alive he never could apologize or say anything to her? I don't know much about Lily but if she considered him a friend then I'm sure she would forgive him and they could at least be friends again.

Not to mention Snape became the same as the bullies that made his life miserable. He treated an unsuspecting Harry terribly just because he was James' son. He never came to genuinely care about Harry he only cared because his eyes were like Lily's.

I'm glad it was revealed Snape was never the bad guy and I admire him for doing the dangerous job of being a double agent... and I can kinda understand why some would be touched by his unrequited love and how lonely his life ended up being. However I don't think it was really right how much his life revolved around one person who he couldn't even make it right with.

OP I agree about Sirius, maybe I'm just biased. Sirius was a much closer friend and all.

Also, IIRC, Snape apologized to Lily, but it was more like, "I didn't mean to call you a Mudblood!"

Ahhh, yeah, I had pretty much totally forgot that whole scene except for the fact that he did technically apologize...but it was just about the worst "apology" ever.

Yup, and not only that, but it wasn't even just Mudblood. That would be bad enough, but the exact line was:

"I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!"

Wow, really? Really? The slur would have been bad enough, but it's worse with those modifiers. Jesus Christ, dude. :/

I don't think that Snape ever really understood where he went wrong. When he was a teenager, I don't think he ever got that the rift wasn't because he insulted Lily, but because he'd bought into the whole Pureblood Supremecy meme and she couldn't ignore it anymore. I go back and forth over whether he developed any further awareness as an adult. (God knows a lot of his personal development stalled out at around 17.)

I get the feeling that, at the end of the day, Death Eaters are bad because they support Voldemort and Voldemort is bad because he killed Lily. That doesn't make his contributions to the Order any less useful, but it sure is depressing -- Lily Potter was the most meaningful thing in Snape's life. He drove her away and inadvertently helped kill her, and spent the rest of his life punishing himself and everyone around him for her death.
