I think you could argue that people are a collection of their experiences. Tabula Rasa, and all that.

Yeah but there's a certain essence that's still you to a degree. Or your personality. Individual personality shared by many but not all.

We are not the sum of our memories. You've forgotten things before and still felt a certain amount of self, no?

Well, I suppose, but I believe that your experiences ultimately form your personality over time. We're more the sum of our experiences/perceptions than our memories. I don't really think people would forget about an event that seriously impacted them, if they did (for whatever reason), they would have still been changed by the event.

Because, just possibly, our brains were basically a giant mess of mush when we were babies and hadn't matured enough to do anything but regulate basic body rhythms/conditions.

It's why we can't learn to walk, learn to talk, or even control our bladder until we're a certain age. Our brains weren't mature enough. Do you remember anything distinct from <2 years of age?

No. I didn't think so.

When we're children, yes, we have a "temperament". Some kids are shy and quiet, others are loud. But when we grow up, the quiet ones can become loud, the loud ones can become quiet, all based on experiences we go through. We can change our personalities based on what we want to be and what has affected us as we've grown and matured. Our brains are elastic, they're all about changing according to our needs.

tl;dr: brains still mush after birth, personalities always open to change.
