Yeah, I agree with this. I love fandom, and it's usually more rewarding than not, but part of me is often hesitant to join one when I know that, soon, fanon and fic and whatnot will shape my opinions and impressions.

This is largely why I enjoy re-reading/re-watching things that I'm in the fandom for: it can be refreshing after immersing myself in fic for a while.

I do think it's worth it - that's why I participate, after all - but sometimes I really do wonder. I'd probably enjoy it much more if my tastes (in pairings and fic and such) were closer to what's typically popular.

I find there's less issue with aforementioned muddying waters and such if I see/read/etc the entire canon before getting involved in fandom because then I can take it all in without outside influence, but I find fandom most fun when things are current and people can speculate and fanfictions/art/etc get jossed every week/book release/etc. Although the specifics of the fandom determine which one I'd ultimately prefer (I found Final Fantasy VII fandom to be better long after the game came out but before the sequels, whereas the Death Note and Code Geass fandoms respectively sort of died and greatly shrunk to pretty much just the kink meme).

Good point about tastes. I do think I enjoy fandom more when my tastes are consistent with what's popular. Not because I'm one to want to follow the crowd, but because it's nice to have stuff in common with people. And even though I don't care whatsoever if people have different tastes than me, it can get tiring if the majority of fandom activity revolves around something I'm not into.

I do agree with you on the enjoyment of fandom. I just got into SNSD, My Little Pony: FiM and Super Sentai fandom this year (where have these things been all my life?!) and I'm greatly enjoying myself since all those things still crank out new stuff every year. Too bad the canon of a lot of other stuff I like has finished for a good while (Xena: Warrior Princess, The Chronicles of Narnia, Dragon Ball Z, Queer As Folk, the Dinosaurs TV show). :(
