The whole Snape/Lily thing was such a hot mess imo. I don't know if it was planned from the beginning, or if JKR came up with it in later books, but it felt like such a backflip for his character. As though JKR was saying "I made a mistake! Ignore Snape being a douche to Harry all these years! Snape still loves Harry's mom and doesn't mind Harry after all. Oops!"

The movie was especially bad with this, because Snape wanted to save Lily, James and Harry. Because he knew that if either James or Harry died, Lily would be heartbroken. So it makes no sense that he targeted Harry during school.
