Also depending on the fandom it may not be built to delve deeply into certain things, such as real life character development where the fanfic can spend lavish amounts of time and words to explore those kinds of themes (sex, violence, angst, etc) that the original source cannot.

Specifically you can look at things like 1/2 - 1 hr TV shows, movies (without sequels) or kid-focused media where there is a lot more that can be done with the material than can be done in the time/media/audience constraints the original creators have.
