I agree. That movie possibly couldn't exist now. I usually think the same when I watch "Paint your wagon".

I think Cracked had an article mentioning the creepy Susan thing

Yeah I remember that. It basically went into exactly what is wrong with this movie. It's a good article, even if I loved Big and don't mind ignoring the less desirable aspects of it.

here's the article for those who may be curious:

I had a similar thought watching some old movie recently. I don't even remember what it was, I was so caught up in "...and then they had an Amber Alert..."

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thought it was statutory rape. Admittedly she had no way of knowing it at the time, but there should have been more of a reaction when she found out his age because technically that made her a sex offender.

I think about shit like this all the time when re-watching my favourite "old" movies (70s-90s). Everytime I re-watch Goonies I can't help but think how censored it'd be and the adventure would be toned down so much to the point of being cliched Disney crap.

You forgot about the fact a grown man would be spending so much time with a 13 year old (his best friend) whom he has no seemingly relation to and how that would raise some eyebrows too. Especially since his best friend had just gone "missing." There'd be a full blown investigation and Josh would probably be a suspect in his own kidnapping.

Your 2nd paragraph is so very, very true.

It's been ages since I watched Big, but did he actually sleep with the woman? I never had the impression that they did. I mean, they slept on different levels of a bunk bed, didn't they?

Yes, but then they had sex a different night (at least, it is strongly implied by boob fondling and next-day peppiness).

That "make out" scene always bothered me. I remember watching Big with my parents as a kid and feeling really uncomfortable when that part of the movie rolled around. I don't think she could have "raped" him since after all she had no idea that he was really a child until later in the movie but it was still a really skeevy scene that shouldn't have been in the movie at all IMO

13 Going on 30, a movie with essentially the same premise but with a female main character, handled that issue at the beginning of the movie but in a completely differently way ("EW GROSS A NAKED MAN"), which is interesting

IIRC, having "consensual" sex with a minor, even if you don't know they're underage (lied about/looks old for their age), is still rape, so yeah, she could have.

Are you serious

He had a job working for a toy corporation, it's safe to assume he was over 18

The movie was about a situation which could not have occurred in real life, most people don't go around asking grown men with college degrees (Tom Hanks' character faked a whole resumé in the movie) for their identification to make sure they are of legal age before having sex with them, what

I'm serious, although I'm not sure why. Everyone seems to be going with the "ewwww, he's really a child, how dare she", so in keeping that in mind, yeah, sex with a minor. Or if you want, sex with a mentally disabled person (in that he was a grown man with the mind of a child). Often it seems that people don't ask sexually forward teenage girls about their ages either.

In Susan's defense, Josh did work for a toy company and had just been promoted. I think if he had any other profession the loft full of toys would have been a red flag. Since they were a part of what he did for a living the perception could be that he was a kid at heart and not actually a kid. She could've thought the acting innocent and naive was a game he was playing with her, you know the shy and coy routine. And we don't know if she had asked him his age and he could've lied about it.

I first saw that movie when I was older, and yeah, I wondered about each one of those points. I couldn't understand why the mom wasn't going to the police.

I was in my teens when that movie came out and to be honest, I wasn't very comfortable then with the sexiness between a child in a man's body and a fully grown and mature woman.

Holy shit I just watched this film like two hours ago. I was continuously bothered by exactly the things you mentioned. I couldn't just accept Josh + Susan's friendship/relationship thing because of the unwitting pedophilia, however sweet the film was.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I was 13 myself when I saw this movie, and I thought the sex thing was just fucking wrong. I was like, "I'm NOT old enough, and neither is he."

Young teen "scoring" as long as said child is male? Yeah, fuck you, Hollywood.
