Um... if all that makes a story interesting is the medium, isn't that kind of a problem?

I mean, movie fans don't always make fan movies. They just write, but that doesn't ruin the heart of the characters or story.

I'm not sure what to think of this secret. Like, I can see how a fic in the style of HS would be neat, but if there's nothing good to a story that doesn't have this style... what does that say for the canon characters?

I think they are referencing how most fics ignore basic parts of the story. Like the sylladexes and other crazy stuff like that. The things that were created for the story and add fun humor to it.

The only thing that ever gets exported is the chatlog system because it is literally the only way characters can talk to each other because it is over the computer. And most fics handwave and go SUDDENLY THE TROLLS AND KIDS ARE TOGETHER SOMEHOW, WE DONT KNOW HOW. so even that doesn't get used, erasing that whole component of the character's interactions.

Lemme guess, these fic writers are focusing on aspects of the canon they like, yes? Probably the characters? Tends to be what fic does. And Homestuck's characters are perfect for that. They're pretty well defined with clear traits and quirks, but have loads of room for expansion.

But I know nothing, I'm in it for the Kan art and read no fic.

I'm guessing it's the fact that the characters are the ones being focused on that's your problem?
I think what you have to remember is that a lot of people don't read things for the setting it happens in. I mean, something could have the most original, amazing setting in the world, but if the characters were bland, stereotypical cookie cutters I'd find it quite hard to interest myself with it. I read mostly for the way people interact with one another- a good setting is just a bonus.

The problem is that most people cannot do the multimedia mangling that you get with Homestuck. It's a comic/chatlog/animation that thinks it's a video game and occasionally is; the fanwork cannot do that. Most people can only do one thing.

Also, hint - get off homesmut, it is mostly about id-satisfaction rather than plot stuff. For more engaging fic, head to the forum. And definitely check out the fan adventures. Of course, it is mostly terrible, but there is more diversity there than you get in most fandoms.

Seconding the recommendation to check out MSPAF.

You'll also probably have better luck with original MSPAFAs over Homestuck spinoffs as well.
