Otherwise known as "an opinion".

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who didn't love the book (but loved most of the characters? so go figure), I appreciate your defense, Anon!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I would appreciate the defense more if the anon had been honest about their intentions. What's so hard about saying "I actually love this book, BUT I recognize it has a LOT of flaws"? (Which it does - I completely understand why a lot of people don't like it.)

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
FTR, I was not dishonest. It was a lot of if/then talk and it was for the purpose of supporting an OP who was getting bombarded with "OMG, THAT'S JUST YOUR OPINION! BLAAARGH!!" for not qualifying their secret with the revered "I think (this book is crap)."

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
^ What they said. I like some of the characters, the leads especially, and most of the jokes and ramblings. But the story is choppy and the end is blah (I never count that against a book. Having a great set up and journey with a blah ending is like a C+ or B with a great ending being A+++. It can be really friggin' hard to wrap up playtime.) It is clear there are two voices at work that are largely playing around. So, you're either going to dig that or not. There isn't anything especially original going on in the story either, it's just one of my favorite takes on 'The Devil and Angel go on Adventures while being Friendly Enemies!'

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's not the best book by either of these authors - but I also don't get the sense it was intended to be some Great Work of Fiction. Essentially, it's two authors writing parody fanfic for Omen, with a few cute characters that have fangirl appeal.

[identity profile] granular.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've never read this. I know I should, as I love both authors' work, but I think I'm afraid that it won't live up to the hype, or something. idk.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I am terrified to rec the book to any of my friends, actually. I love some of the characters to death, but I'm afraid if I go on about it too much I'll overhype it (because essentially it's just a professionally written fanfic).

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
While I agree that nobody should get jumped on for simply stating their opinion (which yes, is true for them), I don't really understand the need to express that opinion most of the time. What was the comment thread even about? Was it for expressing love for the book and you came in bashing it? Cause that makes your a 'harshing on the squee' jerk really. If it was about Good Omens in general, yeah I can see that. I know it's ridiculous but I will never understand the need people have to talk about stuff they don't like. Unless somebody asks me my opinion about it, I tend to concentrate on things I like and ignore the stuff I hate. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
This. I get that it's annoying whenever someone says "X is the greatest thing since sliced bread!!!!1", but it sounds like the OP purposefully trolled people with an opinion they don't actually hold (which wait, what?) I'll agree the book is not The Best Work of Fiction Ever Created, and it's a bit irritating when fangirls go on like Gaiman/Pratchett are two thirds of the Holy Trinity, but that doesn't mean trolling isn't the answer :P

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
it sounds like the OP purposefully trolled people with an opinion they don't actually hold

FTR, that's not accurate. It was a lot of if/then talk and it was for the purpose of supporting an OP who was getting bombarded with "OMG, THAT'S JUST YOUR OPINION! BLAAARGH!!" for not qualifying their secret with the revered "I think (this book is crap)."

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
omg no i hate this "personal fact" bullshit

"something that is true only for that person" = AN OPINION. why is this so hard to understand jfc

"personal fact" wtf how does that make sense i hate you

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
My "personal fact" is that I will punch anyone egotistical enough to call their stupid ass opinions "personal facts".

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
The only person I've ever heard say "it's not an opinion, it's a fact" is this SPN-hating troll at ONTD. Is that a common thing?!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
As others have said "A fact that is true for me but only me" is not a fact at all, it's an OPINION. Facts only count as facts if they can be proven objectively true for everyone.

"Jesus is the son of God" = not a fact.

"The Himalayas are slowly rising as the friction between two tectonic plates pushes them upwards" = a fact. (or at least until some serious empirical research we can't even imagine yet proves it wrong.)

"James Joyce was a great writer" = not a fact.

"James Joyce was a terrible overrated writer" = also not a fact.

Anyone's opinion of any book can never be a fact, no matter how emphatically expressed or how many degrees they have. And anyone putting a negative opinion of anything out there will probably have to deal with disagreement. An opinion might be very deeply held, but under no circumstances is it so "sacred" that disagreement should be shut down.

tl;dr: in short: "I think Good Omens is stupid" isn't an 'individual fact' because there's no such thing. It's an opinion, and a perfectly valid one.

"I think anyone who thinks Good Omens is stupid is themselves stupid" is, as above, an opinion--and an equally valid one.

Same applies to any work, any time.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
So in other words, "I was trolling pointlessly." Cool story, bro.

[identity profile] taleya.livejournal.com 2011-08-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
ahahha. oh god, if this is the thread I think it is...the over a year old thread....you need serious help if this is still eating at you.

Also?
"This book is crap" in a comm built around it = trolling
"I didn't like this book, I think it's crap" = Opinion.

One is you attempting to define a fact applicable across the board. The other is you acknowledging (like those who use the phrase "headcanon") that this is true relative only to you.

As was explained to you. Multiple. Times.
