Yeah but... "bumbling jerk who gets into crazy schemes" isn't a sitcom archetype? They are so many characters like that on sitcoms, and they're there mostly to drive the plot. Peter is basically a less sympathetic version of Homer Simpson (and when Family Guy started out, Peter was pretty much exactly like Homer Simpson.)

Meg and Lois are also pretty much 2D sitcom characters, but if they were the ones driving the plot and doing funny stupid things, of course they'd be more fun to watch, too. It's that they're not the main character that gives them their role in the story.

Plus, I don't know if it's my personal issues or not, but seeing a grown man treat his teenage daughter like that is kind of not that funny.
