Meh, honestly? I'll have issues accepting anyone who is not Peter Parker. A character is not just a costume.

[identity profile] stormseye.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand that, but it's only Ultimate Spider Man, he's still alive and Peter in the regular universe and all of the other alternate universes Marvel has out. Not to mention he'll be back in a year or two.

Plus this story line is coming from Donald Glover's desire to play Spider Man, which was meet with approval and enthusiasm by Ultimate Spider Man's writer.

I understand that...I guess I'll just, wait it out? I don't see the appeal of an alternate Spiderman, for me. I'll probably not buy the comics - might give the movie a shot if it looks decent, eventually. To be honest I've been out of touch since even before the whole Mary Jane marriage retcon, and it's probably better that way.

I can understand on some level this idea, but the passing of the torch has been done twice already in amazing ways. Bucky beign Captain America was fucking amazing and it was a god damn shame when he was taken away from it, and Dick Grayson Batman was awesome.

The idea is that you allow the costume to be the symbol. You say a character is not simply a costume, but the costume itself symbolizes a lot. Spider-Man was always about a person who was struggling to do right in a world that constantly shit on them. Peter filled his role perfectly. He died yes but he died as a true hero and showed that he deserved his powers and that he was one of the greatest heroes of his age. The costume has now been passed to someone new. Someone who will be different, but who will symbolize the same ideals as the last hero.

I get the concept. What can I say...there are some characters you're invested in more than others. Within the universe, you could indeed say the costume is a symbol.Outside the universe, you can say that Marvel is using the symbolism of the costume to keep their merchandise safe while they're launching a new hero. Call me a cynic.

This kid might be all sort of great, but he'll never be Spiderman to me. I'd much rather they'd go for a new hero than that they'd recycle storylines ad nauseum until they completely destroy what the character originally was.

This. After the Ultimatum (fraking Loeb) and deaths of many characters in Ultimate!Verse, Peter was the only one I was invested, and his death in The Death of Spider-Man upset so much.

See a complete stranger in the custome is sad for me, reminds of the horrible Clone Saga in the 90's.

I know Ultimate!Peter is not the original, and not the principal, but Amazing!Peter is such a dick since One More Day that I prefered his version in the Ultimate, the dork and adorable boy who is responsible and caring, and free of deal with demons.

They might just bring him back, eventually. You never know with Marvel. But then that to me would be another of their major retcons and would make being invested in the story even harder.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a pretty bad retcon. Although in the Ultimate verse is more hard bring back a character, in special a hero (Daredevil, Strange, many X-Men, Thor, the Wasp...)

I should have prefered a retcon of Ultimate verse, a brand new day (wink, wink Quesada) that The Death of Spider-Man. With a complete retcon in Ultimate, Ultimatun and his fuckup would be erased.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Funny that you should mention Clone Saga- if they had gone with Ultimate!Jessica I don't think that there would be as much backlash as there has been.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I read Spider-Man for Peter Parker and his troubles, and I'm not about to waste my money on a new character.

[identity profile] judi42.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I read Spider-Man for Peter and his story, (and for my bitterness for the Peter in the universe 616). I feel his death was pointless, and invested me in other character in the costume, is not the same.

I preferred give the benefit of the doubt a Miles.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure Miles will be a good, well-rounded character, but money is tight and I don't want to throw any away on a character I'm not invested in. Peter (pre-OMD) and his supporting cast are some of my favorites in comics, but this Miles person came completely out of the left field. If it was already an established character taking up the mantle (though I disagree with the idea of Spider-Man as a legacy character in general, but whatever) that would be one thing, but clearly this is not the case.

I just wonder why the hell Marvel would think it would be a good idea to replace Peter after the clone saga fiasco. Haven't they learned their lesson from the reaction to Ben? The whole thing just feels, to me, like a big publicity stunt, because we all know that Peter will be inevitably back in the suit in some way by the time the movie rolls along.

[identity profile] judi42.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sure Miles will be a good character, but spent money in the new comics is doubtful in my case.

I, too, disagree with the idea of Spidey as a legacy, for the same motives your said: the Clone saga was such fiasco because Ben was not Peter, and the indignation for OMD was for the same motive, Peter making a deal with Mephisto? the same Peter who was a moral guy?

And for me, the interest in Spider-Man is from the daily life stuff, the bad jokes, the dorkness and geekness of Peter and his life as a superhero.

Big publicity stunt indeed, with the reveal of the Spidey's death one day before the issue was sold.
