Like Chidori is exactly like you, she suffered the same way you did, you are her mouthpiece, being... misunderstood, self destructive, unstable something like that? I have no right to say anything on those things... but if it wasn't like that, then you wouldn't be as offended at how the game treats her in term of her self injury tendencies and what she does to injure her arms. In game they tried to confiscate sharp objects, but she can can hurt herself with the pen, notebook spiral, sketchbook paper, etc. It's never been stated specifically and I do think that part wasn't written well, but she might have cut herself like someone would do with a razor, which you believe she didn't because it would make her different from what you perceive. But she's very vaguely written, and open to interpretation. You can focus on her instabilities and stuff and relate to what you perceived happened to her, but she isn't as special to people as she is to you.

I know she's not "special" to most people. But that has nothing to do with what I'm saying.

The game says she injures her hands. (Well, Junpei says...) And it's certainly possible that she uses a razor off-screen, but when she's on-screen she doesn't.

That's all I'm saying. And yes, that difference is important to me and only me, but it doesn't mean it isn't there!

Oh yeah, Junpei compliments her hands, I remember that. If details like such are that important to you, that's fine.

Just know that it doesn't even matter much to the plot/game itself, because she has astounding healing, which is her most important trait, because it can save Junpei's life, evolve his Persona, attain the desire to be the man she believed him to be, and make him less of a douchebag. The reason she's flat and not that defined is because she's there for Junpei and make him actually likable.

Well, if you want to believe that her lack of characterization has nothing to do with prejudice against the mentally ill and Atlus' complete inability to handle sensitive topics, go ahead. I certainly can't stop you!

Yeah, other Atlus games that have sympathetic portrayals of people with mental illness? What games might those be? Because it's sure as hell not P2. Or any other Megaten games.

Seriously, Atlus fans need to stop pretending everything besides P3/4 was ~sooo awesome~. And I say this as a fan.

In Atlus' defence, at least they tried. I can't think of a single other video game that deals with mental illness in any capacity other than "crazy killer Kefka-esque villain". Unless you want to make the argument that FF7 is all about Cloud having PTSD, idk.

Haha that's how I saw FFVII, but not so much PTSD as he's just completely messed over by Shinra.

Also figured Metal Gear Solid did okay ish. At times it's too dramatic for my liking though.

Pretty petty detail here, but the Japanese word for "hands" includes both the meaning "hands" and "arms" (ditto with legs and feet, actually). So what was translated as "hands" might include the entire arm. So it's vague. (I can't recall exactly what they said in Japanese; it's been a while since I've played it).
