This is the problem though. People don't understand that a Mary Sue is a poorly written character, not a list of qualities. Sue characters often follow the Mary Sue checklist of qualities, but that doesn't mean that any character who has some or all of those qualities is necessarily a Sue.

Seriously, this. The #1 prerequisite for a real Sue is bad writing and characterization. Everything else is just common traits.

Well, yes, but they're common traits that originate from the same impulses that tend to create Sues. They don't make a character a Sue, no more than a hacking cough makes a case of emphysema, but they are quite often warning signs of what's really going on. Just as boys of a certain age tend to think that the only thing cooler than guns is more guns and will create daydream heroes of absurd amounts of gun-toting, gun-firing machismo, girls in a certain stage of development tend to think that their lives would be infinitely better if they were exotic and mysterious, and think that eye colors not found in nature and names that are common words with "y"s and "ie"s displacing less chic vowels are appropriately exotic and mysterious - and if they write down their daydreams of how their life could be so much more awesome, it will probably include those elements.

Again, I'm not trying to make any sort of claim for universality, here. I'm not saying that all characters with exotic eye colors are Mary Sues, or all exotic characters are invented by girls, or anything like that. I'm just saying that Sue authors tend to share certain common tendencies - and those common tendencies tend to produce some strikingly similar results.
