Personally the movie version made more sense to me. The book scene was awesome, but it also made no sense in terms of either character. Bellatrix is awesome and powerful. She is Voldemort's second in command. To see her taken out in an actual full on duel by a woman who we've never seen have any sort of fighting ability just didn't make any sense. I loved the scene the first time I read it, because it does read as awesome, but reading it a second time made me realize that it actually didn't make sense and didn't work.

The book version always made sense to me. Molly had been part of the OotP the first time Voldemort was around. That means she's had dueling experience with death eaters, possibly Bellatrix. The reader was lead to believe that Molly was the wizard version of a "soccer mom" and had played a more passive role. The only time you saw her do a spell was for housework, but we know she has a fire within her by seeing how she reacts when one of her kids gets in trouble. The scene was supposed to be an, "Oh snap!" moment. Then again, I didn't picture her suddenly getting ninja dueling skills, but just prove that she can fight (and well enough) when provoked.

...She wasn't in the order the first time round, I'm pretty sure. And the only reason she was involved the second time round, imo, was because of Harry. Having said that, I'm sure she was powerful, and JKR has said that the reason she had the upper hand over Bellatrix was because she was a mother (protecting kids etc.) and that Bellatrix underestimated her.
