For me I can't read fanfic for something unless the canon is closed or unless I don't particularly like where the canon is going. So yeah, I get this. It's just hard to go back and read once things get Jossed.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can get into open-canon fandoms, but I hate it when stuff gets jossed. I hesitate to write fics when I know a future revelation will make it AU, and on one level it's hard for me to enjoy other people's jossed fics, even if the fics themselves are really good.

[identity profile] aquaricom.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
i fucking hear ya. The 10th book of Durarara comes out today and I fear the jossage that will entail.

I have no idea how fanfiction writers do this.

After years of getting into closed-canon fandoms almost exclusively... yeah, I see the appeal. But I miss being there when the big revelations happened and speculating on directions the canon might take. Both have their benefits.

[identity profile] cousinmary.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can only -write- fanfic if the canon is closed. I hate it when a series couters my arc or characterization. I love SPN, but I don't think I can write it until it's done.

[identity profile] plushulala.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Even then, I'd be worried someone would say something about the show in an interview that would joss my fic.

[identity profile] royalbk.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So much THIS!
*sigh*

[identity profile] naviechance.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand that.

[identity profile] isa-lyxces.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I kinda miss being on the bandwagon, though. I remember when KHR was all the rage. I read it a few years back, and I always missed not being in the middle of it.

Well, the few times I've been into something in a fannish way that's incomplete, I still join discussions and stuff but I do have trouble producing fanworks, because I get all paranoid about being jossed and then getting needlessly bitter because I attached myself to some irrelevant factoid in a character's past that ended up being impossible.

Not that I've been reading old HP fics and journals from 2005 and seeing this happen repeatedly, oh no.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I used to be this way. ngl, it's a lot more stable and I prefer it. Until upstarts show up and start tryin' to retcon shit and it's like AW HALE NO

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I can definitely understand that. It's a much better approach than writing for active canons and then constantly getting upset about being jossed. One of my favorite authors (who has written tons of AU, I might add) stopped posting a perfectly entertaining story because the latest season didn't go the way she expected. Jesus. No, you are not psychic. You're going to get things "wrong," no matter how familiar you are with a show or the creator. Either accept that or pick another show that ended forty years ago and all the writers are dead.

[identity profile] intoalkaseltzer.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
i fucking love looking at old fics that have become au because of canon. people are so creative!

[identity profile] plushulala.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Not so much fan fiction, but I really love going back through old message board posts, reading all the spec threads that were running wild in the A:TLA fandom during it's run.

[identity profile] intoalkaseltzer.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
for me, the crazy theorizing is what makes me realize just how smart (and fun) fandom people are.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I see your point; it gets annoying getting Jossed all the time. But then again, following along and going through the twists and turns and craziness and doing it 'live' with other fans can be AAAAWESOME. It's more fun and more of a comfort during the sad/traumatic shit, IMO.

So who else is now trying to figure out what American action and adventure show premiered on July 1, 1997?

[identity profile] fickletastictot.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious but I'm too lazy to look things up. :P Buffy comes to mind though!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The closest I'm finding on the Google Machine is that Stargate SG-1 premiered on July 27, 1997 and the Buffy first season finale was June 2, 1997. I'm getting nothing for July 1, though.

[identity profile] plushulala.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ally McBeal comes to mind.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I thought one of my canons had been closed for good until relatively recently, and I got quite a bit of my ideocanon Jossed. Then again, the creative team wasn't the original authors, either, so in a sense the new canon is just fanfic that got the official nod.

Really good canons will never truly be closed. They'll have spin-offs and derivatives and re-imaginings forever, and people will argue over what's really canon forever. Just look at the Matter of Britain - there are people still annoyed about that French Marty Stu, Lancelot, barging in and taking over a perfectly good story . . . and new fans being brought in by each new retelling. Sherlock Holmes, Superman, Captain Kirk - their stories will never be done, and the line between canon and fanon blurs over time. You can stick to the original authors, love the non-canonical novels, or anything in between.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
My fics have been jossed before. I never really minded. In that case, it becomes AU.

Ironically, the only time open canon really bothered me was when a previously-obscure theory got more popular and was eventually proven RIGHT. In fact, some events specifically from my fic were shown to be true. It destroyed my fic's originality! XD

[identity profile] atom-bunny.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I also prefer it if the canon is done before I get into a series, so you are not alone, Anon.

I learned the hard way though. I started writing a couple of Naruto fics a few years ago. I never got anywhere near finishing them, but now I couldn't bring myself to even if I wanted to because things have changed way too much.

I'll stick to older fandoms.

[identity profile] jaydestarlight.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
this makes sense.
