St. Anger just blows. And I'm a pretty recent fan, I've only been really familiar with their music for the last 5 or 6 years. I adore all of their albums, even Load and Reload, except for St. Anger. It's just...lacking. It's metal-by-numbers. I didn't think there was anything "new" or interesting about it.

Their latest album is amazing, though. It's not just a rehash of their old sound, it's like they're expounding upon it and making it fresh and cool, which I love. I really believe a lot of that has to do with the inclusion of Rob Trujillo. I think he's helped to breathe new energy into Metallica that's very obviously heard in Death Magnetic. It's like Metallica has ~*that spark*~ again.

I know how you feel completely, even though I'm not a Metallica fan. I really hate the "OMG THEY CHANGED DDDDD:" attitude. The forums for my favorite band are full of this, and it's really entitled and silly. As you say, bands should evolve as they age. Even if one doesn't like the new sound, they should respect it (unless it truly, absolutely crap and is bad for reasons having nothing to do with it being different). I don't like my aforementioned favorite band's most recent album, but I know that it is their vision and that they worked hard on it, so I'm not going to complain that they didn't give me exactly what I wanted.

It's not that they changed.

It's that St. Anger is a truly terrible album.

Idk, I like St. Anger above all the other albums, so. :T I really don't like their old stuff. Does that make me a bad fan too.

This. This. This. The nature of being alive is change. Staying the same makes you a one-note joke and pretty soon all you're doing is a playlist of your hits from twenty years ago. I loved Load and Reload as much as I love their first four albums. I love Whiplash and Battery the same as Mamma Said. Outlaw Torn is a 10 minute orgasm. So is Master of Puppets.

St. Anger, not so much. But it's their post-therapy album so I cut it some slack. I'm just glad they aren't afraid to be more and different over the years. It keeps them fascinating.

I'm going to buck the trend here- I think a band changing their sound is a completely valid reason to stop following them. Whatever music you like, you like it because it has certain qualities that you enjoy, and if the changes mean those qualities aren't there anymore then, of course you're going to like their old music better. Demanding that musicians never change or experiment is undeniably wanky, and it's stupid to bash them or their current fans for liking something you don't... but if the magic is gone, it's gone.

It's like with most things. If you like a restaurant's food, a brand of clothing's style, the smell of soap, etc. You stick with it because you like it. If it changes and you don't like it, you shouldn't feel obligated to stick with it just because you've liked it x amount of years.

Sorry but no, fuck you.

Death Magnetic is amazing, all the more so because it's such a surprise.

St. Anger is one of the worst albums of the 00s. It's not that they changed, it's that the album just SUCKS.

As a musician (my band's website), I really hope I'm not doing the same shit 25 years from now that I'm doing now. That sounds just... awful. Going through the motions over and over again? Fuck that. So please keep supporting old bands still doing new things.

eta: in other words: fuck nostalgia. Seriously.

late but fuck it

it wasn't about "ZOMG THEY CHANGED". Or, maybe it was for some people. But I thought Death Magnetic kicked a whole bunch of ass. St. Anger was just...a bad album. It was boring. The guitar got buried (if you watch Some Kind of Monster, the documentary about them while they were making that album, you actually see Kirk Hammett's face when Bob Rock says he thinks they should go in a ~new direction~ and cut out the guitar solos and it was sad as fuck). It was BORING.
