Totally not wondering the specifics or anything, but yes the most ardent shippers involved in any ship war always seem to end up being assholes.

I want to say I did too in the start, though ultimately I ended up hating various ships because of it. For example, I never had a problem with something like H/Hr, but many of it's shippers were such dicks that I just started to defend other ships to the point where I found myself hating H/Hr. It still squicks me to this day, though I known it's no worse than any of the fanon ships.

Eh, yeah, kind of me too. Except the fandom and shippers I was involved in were for a popular slash pairing, and apparently you can't be "against" any slash group in this particular fandom without being a homophobe.

Yeah, I can't care about shipping wars anymore. Since being in Whedonverse fandom and Supernatural, I am too used to ships dying a horribly tragic death once they become happy. The wars become pretty futile after that.

Eh, true, partly I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

But on a more serious note, have you ever found a ship war where the opposite sides didn't think the fans of the rival ship were assholes and getting what's coming? Just look at the first comment sequence up there, for the Lost fandom- both say they joined in on the fan wank because the rival shippers "screeched" too much, they took offense to their slogan... From outside the war, it looks like both sides are just using this as an excuse to join in on the banter and still consider themselves "above" the pettiness at the same time.

It always sounds easily avoidable, if only we resisted the urge to join in on a hint of drama.

I'm in the Ace Attorney fandom, and while I'm assuming that the ship wars have died down (I haven't been on Court Records in forever), I remember what it was like back in the day. Phoenix/Edgeworth shippers were hated for their supposed smugness, Phoenix/Maya and Edgeworth/Franziska shippers were hated for loving "gross, incestuous" pairings, Phoenix/Iris shippers constantly played like they were victims (and to be fair, they did get a lot of flack for loving an unpopular character), het shippers in general were hated for alleged homophobia, and gay shippers were hated for alleged delusion. At the end of the day, what was the fighting for? What did we get out of it?

The bottom line is that plenty of people feel like drama and wank are fun. I think that most of us do, at least on some level. Oh, we pretend to hate it, but is that really true? Many of us also derive pleasure from being a part of a "team" as it were.
