THIS. John was so open about who he was. He even admitted he used to hit women before he met Yoko. She really had such an affect on him, but it's been downplayed by all the people hating on her.

Honestly, I refuse to even take any of these anti-Lennon secrets seriously until someone tells me they have at least read a biography of his (as in book, not web).

Yeah, really. I distinctly remember him saying "that is why I'm on about peace all the time" or something a lot like that; he knew he couldn't undo the bad things he did in the past, so he just focused on making a difference in the present/future. I watched this doc called The U.S. vs. John Lennon that talked a lot about his activism, and I just loved the way he said that people were going to listen to him anyway because celebrity was weird like that, so he might as well say something worth listening to. Just because some of his fans canonize him as this utterly perfect human being doesn't mean that's how he presented himself. Geez.

I agree so much. I think it was more some fans painting him as perfect that created that image. John himself admitted he wasn't perfect at all. I remember a quote where he said, "some days I suspect I'm a loser and some days I think I'm God almighty".

Still, he remains a guy I would have loved to have met.

Yeah, you said it.

"Honestly, I refuse to even take any of these anti-Lennon secrets seriously until someone tells me they have at least read a biography of his (as in book, not web)."

Same here. I automatically assume that anyone thinking that Lennon was a hypocrite doesn't know him very well. An arsehole is debatable although I do think he had redeeming qualities. But hypocritical? Nope. He was honest, to a flaw, and especially about himself.

But a lot of people, who only have a very superficial grasp on his admittedly complex personality, end up thinking of him as hypocritical. Also, oh my god, I hate someone a lot of people respect and love, I'm so ~edgy.

"LENNON: It is a diary form of writing. All that "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved" was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically -- any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything's the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am a violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster."

how is that not the most honest thing you've ever seen in an interview? It's almost too honest.

[identity profile] that-evening.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I mean, he was always out front about it. There was no bull. When people refuse to give an actual reason as to why they hate him, anything to back it up, I just can't help but the think they are trying to be edgy.

Like, for example, there's a clip on youtube of a Beatles concert from way back and people claim there's a part where John makes fun of mentally challenged people. Meanwhile, later on life, he and Yoko did a charity concert for a school for the mentall challenged. People don't seem to get that people change and grow.

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I would be fine with people disliking him if they had actual legit reasons, and I do think you could find some. But it seems to be fairly empty, most of the time, or based on gossips and simplified versions of events.

and, don't get me started on that. There was a debate in there about whether he actually did so much for charity at all. Someone even said Angelina Jolie had done more than him. I was like... wat. People seem to forget that he was a) the very first rock star or whatever to do something like this, b) that there was barely a day passing without him doing some charity thing at the height of his charity moment (69-73), but hello, it was forty years ago, you probably don't remember any of it.

about the spazz moves and stuff... I do think he was making fun of his fans, not mentally challenged people. They were so dumb and hopeless, to him, most of the Beatlesmaniacs, screaming so loud he couldn't even hear himself bloody sing. He did have something with "cripples" though, as you know since you read the Norman book, which he grew out of. But I'm still not convinced he made fun of them on stage.
