The fact you love this movie now makes me want to draw Megamind as Seymour.

I hate the original ending, TBH. I'm really glad they changed it.

Two LSOH secrets in a row? Win!

And OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaBJDRIgJRY

That's the first part of the original ending. You can find links to the second and third parts from there.

And I totally agree with you.

Thank you. I actually saw those clips a couple of weeks ago for the first time, which basically inspired the secret. Allowing that this is surely an extremely rough cut that would have undergone a lot more trimming, I found it really brilliantly done but disturbing, given I'd pretty much grown up with these characters (although, I don't think Mean Green Mother works well at all in the unhappy ending, coming right after Audrey's death).

Apparently, the footage still exists in color, along with earlier cut scenes which would make the ending flow a lot better, and could theoretically still be put together into a Director's Cut.

Gotcha! I, too, would love to see it all put together.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I do love that film, and I agree that they should have kept the original ending. But one of the greatest films ever made? Best Actress Oscar? LOL. It's a fun movie and at it's held up all these years, but I'd hardly give it that kind of critical acclaim.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. Well, I won't argue the point on greatest films, allowing I may love this movie just a little too much to be completely objective, but I must defend Ellen Greene. I know she really rubs some people the wrong way, but I do think she gives a brilliant comic performance, one that was recognized and nominated by New York theater critics well before the movie was made. I've seen clips of other actresses trying to play Audrey, and it's just painful in comparison. There's no heart, no pathos lurking under the laugh lines, like there always is in Greene's performance. Of course, since the Academy doesn't usually know what to do with comedy (witness also--Steve Martin somehow not getting a Supporting Actor nomination), it would've taken a great death scene--one which would've lent tremendous poignancy to otherwise humorous set-pieces like "Somewhere That's Green"--to win them over.

Anyway, if Renee freakin' Zellweger can get a nomination as a barely-serviceable Roxie Hart, why not the definitive Audrey in what would have been a faithful adaptation of a now-classic play?

How was it supposed to end?

Spoilers for Little Shop

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Audrey dies, Audrey II eats Seymour, and then the three girls help some guy take bits of Audrey II so he can breed his own and sell them.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
While the original ending actually closes the arc better, it also means poor Audrey can't catch a break - the story craps on her from beginning to end. I kind of find it painful to watch. (Besides, the ending we got is hardly a happily-ever-after, either - just a respite.)

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I do agree, and that's the main reason I like having a version where things actually turn out well for her (as far as we see). She's just this really kind, sweet person with absolutely no sense of self-worth whatsoever who truly believes she deserves to be abused. Then after getting chomped on, she pretty much begs Seymour to feed her to the plant so he can be a success. It's so pathetic, but so in character, that I just find it too sad to be even darkly funny. And then comes that ironic reprisal of "Somewhere That's Green"...

I suspect this is the main reason the test audience couldn't handle the original ending. It's a great tragic death, but it's perhaps too well-done to maintain a comic tone into the finale.

Re: OP here

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
The reprisal of "Somewhere That's Green" doesn't work well for me, but I'm fairly sure that it's because I can't hear it anymore without hearing "Part Of Your World" echoing in the background (darn Ashman & Menken plagiarizing themselves!), not because of any actual flaw.

I like everything about this secret.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think the sadness of the original ending was something Seymour deserved, but at the same time it would have just sucked to watch Audrey suffer. The movie already was played for lots of comedy so it would have been pretty dark to go with the original ending.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
The other thing is, in the original play, Seymour is far more culpable than in the movie. He has an entire song to decide whether or not to let Orin die, whereas in the movie he's freaked out and it just sort of happens. Same deal with Mr. Mushnik--in the play, Seymour actually tricks him into getting eaten instead of just being scared and confused and even sort of warning him in the last minute. Also in the movie, after Mr. Mushnik's death, he's getting dragged along, haplessly looking for a way out, until Audrey's near-death forces him to finally stand up and take responsibility, whereas in the play he actually chooses to sign those contracts, knowing it will mean more killing, in order not to lose Audrey. In that context, as tragic as Audrey's death is, it is both honest and necessary. She represents the truly good and innocent who will suffer under the destruction Seymour has unleashed on the world in the course of his pursuit of personal gain.

Apparently, a full version of "The Meek Shall Inherit" (basically, the "sell your soul to the devil" sequence) was filmed but discarded once they chose to go with the happy ending. Without that plot element, Audrey's death would be just overly cruel for the sake of being dark.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Is this even a secret? I thought this was more like common knowledge to anyone who has dedicated enough time to the film...

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, from what I've seen, there's a really steep divide between fans of the movie and theatrical fans who pretty much think the source material was raped, so acknowledging that the original ending is far more powerful while also nostalgically loving the happy ending because seeing two of your favorite childhood characters get eaten is not exactly pleasant seems to get you blasted by both sides.

Of course, it's very possible that this is a majority opinion if you grew up knowing and loving the movie.

[identity profile] torayakari.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
YES! THIS!

I completely agree with you OP, I wish with all my heart they'd kept the original ending of the stage musical for the film, since that is my biggest complaint for the otherwise flawless film adaptation. I do see why it was changed, because Seymour was portrayed more sympathetically in the film as opposed to the stage version (most noticeably in the stage version Seymour decides to let Orin died from the laughing gas, while in the film he doesn't really have any time to think about it, and in the stage version he basically "kills" Mushnik while it happens by accident in the film)...
But that just makes me wonder, why change Seymour's portrayal in the first place then? Why not portray him like he is in the stage version and keep the original ending? Sure, it's not as happy, but you have to admit it makes more sense and it's way more amusing. Plus in the film how they did it was incredibly awesome and epic (Audrey II conquering New York City FTW!), and it makes me that much angrier it was replaced.

I really do hope along with you someday a true Director's Cut version is released with the original ending returned and in color. That would just make my life, man, I'm such a dork for this musical.
