I hope it doesn't come to pass. I like to believe that Viz believes in this title like us and there is a dedicated fanbase out there that is keeping it alive. I mean, it's one of those rare shoujo that is pretty epic in scope.
I need to catch up, I swear. I will feel like they stomp on my heart if they cancel it...

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)Your average shoujo manga buyer is a younger teen or pre-teen girl. She finds history boring, things shaved samurai-heads look weird, and only wants easy love stories with lots of UST, fanservice, cute clothes, and tons of hot men. Kaze Hikaru falls short on all of those things to their eye, particularly when compared to the biggest shoujo sellers in NA: Fruits Basket, Vampire Knight, and Ouran.
Viz moved Kaze Hikaru back to one volume a year when the economy really tanked. Less people buying less manga. If Kaze Hikaru wasn't selling well enough at four volumes a year to earn back its manufacturing cost, then we are lucky Viz is still giving us one volume a year.
I am surprised the title was licensed for NA at all, to be honest. Perhaps KH was a package deal, or perhaps it was a rider on something else. "If you license Glittery Shoujo Title, then you must accept Kaze Hikaru as well." Or perhaps someone at Viz is a huge fan of KH and pushed to bring it over. Who knows? I do think that it was part of the original lineup of Shojo Beat magazine is encouraging, at least!
Sales are the bottom line. Viz is in this business to make a profit. All we can do as fans is be sure to buy every volume, tell Viz how much we love it, and spread the joy of the title in the hopes of making new fans for new sales for hopefully more new volumes every year!

Some people may think "well DUH" about that, but the thing is, Viz's attention will go where the money goes. So in order to get more of the series we want, the best way of saying that to Viz is to essentially vote with our wallets and say "this is what we want, give us more of it". It's as simple as that.
