I agree, for the movie version at least. I mean there's no discounting just how creepy it is, but I appreciated how it was played, and I thought it was a pretty good pay off for the whole "Lily's eyes, James's everything else" thing that was repeated ad nauseum.

What the hell character does Snape have without the Lily stuff

Jesus, people, get your shit together

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, OBVIOUSLY, good characters never have love interests. The opposite sex just downgrades their badass/cold heartedness!

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
It would be funnier if so many people didn't think this.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Um...you do realize Snape went, what, 4-5 books without having any relation to Lily's character? Some people just preffered it that way. No big deal.
ext_19953: (marauders ride again!!)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
uh, he would still have been that bitter old asshole who had a shitty childhood/teen age/life and grew up proud and cold and mean and got in with the Wrong Crowd but decided in the end he didn't want to be evil. He got a teaching position (arguably the worst job he could POSSIBLY have picked for himself) and bullied a bunch of kids and was miserable all the time BUT, at the end of the day, was still one of the Good Guys and despite all his flaws, when the shit went down he could always be counted on to do the right thing. Even when "the right thing" is thankless, dangerous, hard as fuck, and will make evvvvvverybody hate him. (Ya know, totally the same guy as with the Lily stuff, but without any of the actual references to Lily. In fact, arguably/maybe a better guy, cause then it seems he turned on Voldemort because he came to the conclusion that magical racism isn't cool and he should just hate everyone equally, rather than just to protect one particular person)

the Snape ♥ Lily thing has grown on me in recent years, but he had character before that. Although if you didn't know, or at least have a feeling, that he killed Dumbledore on his own orders BEFORE you were told in The Prince's Tale, I guess some of this is missing. But like..I knew

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot agree with this post hard enough (except the Snape/Lily thing growing on me, but whatevs), so all I can say is, props to you, man. Props to you and this entire post.

Man, when I first read it I was like "really, JKR? Really? all those Snapewives wanting a Redemption Swoop for him (and thus totally missing the point of the character) were actually right?" I liked him because he's an asshole AND a good man and didn't think he needed ~secret pain~ to explain it, so I thought the ♥Lily♥ thing was cheap. But..maybe it was partially the movie, which I thought did it well, and maybe it was also just time, but idk. Some people say every cynic is just an idealist who had their heart broken too many times, and I guess being bullied at Hogwarts and having a shitty home life before then wasn't enough and if she WANTED to give him this whole thing too...I dunno. I've mellowed on it. I'll never really love it, but it's less weak to me now than it was. But I totally understand if it still bugs you

and thanks :D (apparently I am incapable of NOT tl;dr-ing everywhere)

Cheap is a good word for it. Actually, it's the perfect word.

I think the Snily stuff butchered his character because the hardcore shippers romanticize the crap out of him and make him out to be completely innocent and sweet and kind-hearted. That's pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of Snape. He was interesting because of his flaws.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I just didn't even realize that his tears were supposed to be his memories at first, haha. I mean, I'd read the book, but the way they filmed the scene made it confusing to me. Also, I HATED that they added the, "you have your mother's eyes" line. God, way to lay it on thick. In the book it was just, "Look . . . at . . . me . . ." and at first it's kind of like, "uhh, okay" but then it becomes clear with the memories. So, I hated that they added that line in.

But that was just me. xD;

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciated that they added "You have your mother's eyes..." because I really DON'T think the movies played it up that much. I'm sure it must have been mentioned, but I can't actively remember it being said once. And I can't honestly say I've given Lily's eyes any notice in any of the instances she's been onscreen. But then, I was also incredibly slow on the uptake with the book version of that scene, too.

Really, I think the only thing I didn't like about that scene was Snape's two cloudy tears that somehow became something like 8 ounces of liquid memory five minutes later.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
True, they didn't play up the eyes thing in the movie, but since I'm such an avid reader of the books, I already knew. xD; Well, c'est la vie! Different strokes. None of my friends were bothered by the line, either, so I really do think it's just me. xD

And hey, Snape's tears are really potent, okay.

[identity profile] uglynoodles.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Snape tears are like snake venom
2 drops can kill that shit dead :D

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
In the movies I think Remus says the line, Sirius says the line, Slughorn says the line, Snape says the line....

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___flight_risk/ 2011-08-13 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, yep. I watched PoA the other day and as Lupin is telling Harry this, he's pretty much like "Yep. My mother's eyes. I totes get it."

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...okay. Clearly three people saying it once over seven films was not enough to make me feel like hearing it again in the eighth was being bludgeoned to death with the concept.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
And then they went and got an actress with brown eyes to play young Lily.

Cripes, movie people, colored contacts are a thing.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the way he said "look at me," because it sounded really tender and as if he was talking to Lily herself in a loving way...and then I realized how creepy that sounds. But--you know?! (Overall I actually really liked the Snape/Lily stuff because I thought it was both sweet and destructive, in a way--like, we were meant to feel bad for him because he loved her and lost her, but we were definitely meant to understand that he fucked up BIG time and it would never have worked out, etc. It's one of those doomed ships I love so much. HOWEVER, the problem is that the fandom kinda...misappropriated the whole thing and leather pantsed the bejeezus out of him/the ship. Whoops.)

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
For me, the Snape/Lily storyline was essential. The whole series is about the ability of love to overcome hate and this to me was the single most poignant manifestation of that message.

[identity profile] kaasen.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree with this. I thought Snape would have been a better character overall if he was undeniably an asshole but was now atoning for his mistakes he'd made out of hatred and didn't want to see the world ruined by Voldemort. (To quote Sirius, the world isn't split into good people and death eaters.) I don't agree that him doing it all for Lily exactly OMG RUINED HIM! but yeah.
