UGH THISSSSS.

As someone who is hoping to major in the Japanese language at university, it seriously pisses me off that there are people out there spreading such misinformation about the Japanese language and about Japan itself. And since everyone on TGWTG makes money from their videos, every time someone clicks on these videos they are contributing money to these girls for teaching them such wrong information.

Don't even get me started on their so-called 'etiquette' lessons. No, anime is not how you learn Japanese etiquette. And googling things like 'bowing' or 'taking your shoes off at the door' does no make you an expert in Japanese behavior!!

And FFS dressing in akward lolita clothing does absolutely nothing to teach people about Japanese or Japan. It just perpetuates the stereotype that Japanese people are "kooky" and wear weird things like maid dresses and blue hair all the time, even though only a very small portion (usually girls who work in the tourism industry) actually do this IRL!!

D: That they get paid for their videos... and that I actually sat and watched a whole bunch of them out of pained curiosity... Also reading some of the comments of people thanking them for explaining and etc. BUT. BUT. BUT. I can't even express.

I totally get why it is bad for the image of Japan, too, but as a foreigner living in Japan long-term, the terrible thing is that shit like this is terrible for foreigners in Japan, because people expect that all foreigners are weird anime otaku people. :-( Which we are not, obviously.

mte. it's bad on both ends. it enforces the stereotype that japanese people are all anime obsessed weirdos who dress in ridiculous visual-kei esque outfits and act like hyperactive children all the time, and it enforces the stereotype that foreigners who are genuinely interested in japan's language and culture are nothing more than cat ear weaing weaboos who think that anime is an accurate representtion of japan.

Though now I want to look them up just to see it for myself.

As someone whose not only studied Japanese for over a decade and majored in East Asian Studies and currently resides in Japan, I have this kind of masochistic urge to get myself worked up in rage of Japan!Fail.

Also, good luck with your Japanese studies! I know how hard it can be, but it seems like you have a real interest in Japan and the language which, in my opinion, really helps!
