Oh, you've never heard the comments on fat people in here, in other communities, or in RL, have you ? They're cruel. I understand why someone would be afraid to cospay because of these people.

Oh, I have. I definitely have. Being a fat person who cosplays, who cannot sew garments for shit on top of that, I am well aware that people do take cosplaying way too seriously. That's why I specified that nobody in their right mind takes cosplay that seriously. Because it's just dress-up.
OP specifically mentioned being scared of being a "bad cosplayer," not fear of criticism from assholes. I honestly believe there is no such thing as a "bad cosplayer" if everybody's having a good time. Anything else is just mind-blowingly ridiculous. (This is not to say I have a problem with people who take their own costumes seriously and put a lot of time and money and effort into them. I consider that part of the fun because it's entirely optional and should be exclusively based on personal standards of excellence.)
If one chooses not to expose themselves to the possibility of ridicule than it's wholly understandable and entirely their choice. But they're not being ridiculed because they did anything wrong, it's because the people doing the ridiculing are assholes.
