But that's Loki, the trickster, the god of lies. It's very true to Loki's character, both mythological and comics versions, that he is a tricky, devious sort. If anything, it makes it interesting to rewatch the movie. There is literally not one single line of dialogue in which he might NOT be lying. Loki definitely manipulated Thor into getting banished, and furthermore, he was the one who allowed Jotuns into Odin's treasure vault, explicitly just to ruin his brother's big day, an action which got several Asgardian guards killed.

Loki is a very dark character from the onset. Finding out his true origin just tips him over into genocidal maniac territory, as now he feels the need to PROVE himself the good son (something Odin and Frigga accepted him as all along, except Loki couldn't see that). He is willing to destroy an entire race to ease his troubled mind, not to mention threatening Jane, a woman who in no way could've been a threat to him, just to twist the knife in Thor's heart a little deeper. Loki's jealousy of Thor is not his villainous trait; his disregard for life is.

So much this. I love Loki's character, and I really hate seeing him cast as this super harmless fluffball of angst. He's getting people killed for the general effect of a stink bomb even before his Freudian excuse kicks in. His disregard for life is interesting because it's totally there from the start. I wonder what lead to its development. It might even be his royal upbringing which removed him from the "common Asir" or something built into Frost Giants.

I know he's the fandom darling and thus a certain amount of Loki in Leather Pants is to be expected but it's to the detriment of his character in my humble opinion. I like my Loki sneaky, clever, and cheerfully amoral. This one's not so cheerful, but I'd like to keep his other characteristics!

(On a related note, how dare Odin take in an abandoned baby! What gall! And then to raise him as a prince and love him like a son? Where does he get off, that monster! Obviously Odin isn't perfect but I think fandom has been demonizing him.)

Yeah, the Odin demonization is bizarre. There's really no indication in the movie that Odin dislikes or neglects Loki (if anything, Thor gets the brunt of Odin's temper). When Loki confronts him about his origins, Odin gently tries to explain everything. Maybe he shouldn't have kept it a secret, but I think it's understandable that Odin and Frigga didn't want Loki to feel different. They didn't want him growing up feeling like a monster, or a charity case. They took him in as a SON.

I think it's worthwhile to point out that both Thor and Loki have their dark sides on full display in this movie. Thor's villainous characteristics are his selfishness and thoughtlessness. Loki's is his disregard for the value of life. The thing is, Loki wanted to prove himself Thor's equal and prove himself a true son to Odin, and both of these things he could've accomplished HONORABLY over the course of the movie, but he resorts to trickery and pettiness instead. Really, I find all this very interesting, and it's part of the reason the movie has excellent rewatchability. Neither Thor nor Loki are one-note characters.

I doubt Loki's villainous characteristic has anything to do with his Jotun heritage. Laufey, who is the only other Jotun we see in any detail, is obviously perturbed by these brash Asgardians invading his realm, but he's seen the horrors of war and is reluctant to destroy the peace between their realms, even if he has a good reason to lose his temper. I think that is simply Loki's own darker side and unique to himself.

Odin's "demonization" might come from the fact that, in the comics right now, he's decided to sacrifice Midgard/Earth to save Asgard, and beat the shit out of Thor and locked him up for arguing. A lot of the fans are playing fast and loose with the various versions of canon.

Woobifying Loki is also canon, since he's a pretty adorable kid right now, for all that he's still dangerous and morally corrupt. He's still a dangerous and morally corrupt kid who is trying to save the world and loves his brother, which has its own appeal.
