It's really not that easy, especially if the SM is from a (generally speaking) homophobic country. It's really hard to change one's environment, much less your circle of friends. Making new set of friends is not as easy as you'd expect, and if I was right and the SM is from a homophobic country, then it's hard for him/her to go out from their comfort zone and risk their reputation by finding new friends. They might even get killed, if they were from some third world countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran and other third world countries, or be thrown in jail in some others.
