Me too. I could never really get into G1.

I AM ALL OVER THESE TF SECRETS LATELY WHAT

TF:A Megatron is amazing in several different ways that I will not get into under the notion that my friends will start looking at me more strangely than what they already do protip: I'd hit that

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not alone OP. And one of my reasons for preferring TFA is Megatron. TFA Megs was brilliant. He got all that you want in a villain.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It took me a while to warm up to it but honestly, I think it's better too, if for no other reason than that it had a story arc and made an attempt at character development and world building.

When I first heard about the live-action movies I tried to watch G1, but I just couldn't get into it.

But I got into TF:A pretty easily. I think, for me at least and as some others have noted, that it may have been the over-arching story arc and the characterization/character development

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The first transformers show I ever fully watched was TFA, and I loved it, so I sat down and tried to watch G1. And uhhh... it's obvious that nostalgia and the idea that the first installment wins is the only thing that gets people to still sing its praises.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I could have written this. TFA was how I got into the show, due to its connections to one of my favorite animated series (icon related.) I went back to watch G1 and... it's corny. Corny in a "It's kinda fun to watch and laugh" way, but still, the fandom needs to learn, or at least respect when others learn, that something can have nostalgia value and not be high art.

[identity profile] clowderheart.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I remember being fourteen (I got into the fandom through Armada as an 11-year-old, and discovered the internet three years later) and hearing the G1 fans waxing poetic searching Youtube for this wonderful show to see what they were talking about.

I was a bit underwhelmed.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I love G1, totally. But I love it for its potential, not its reality. I think the writers were bad at everything but being hella creative, and that creativity gives me fic food. If it weren't about taking those many ideas, the cracky and the not, and running with them, I wouldn't like it much at all.

That and I'm in ridiculous love with G1 Megatron's head for some reason even I can't quite explain. And both Welker's and Cullen's delivery. Not so much the voices, but the delivery, for them both.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I love me some G1 *lends out nostalgia glasses*, but I don't find you weird at all. Animated is seriously awesome stuff.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because G1 was first doesn't mean it's the best TF cartoon ever created. It's cracktastic and unintentionally funny and therefore I love it to bits, but it can't hold up in terms of storytelling or character development.

I like G1 and TFA equally, but for different reasons.

Chinimated, mh? Actually I love the art style of Animated because they put so much love and funny little details into the character designs. Gotta love the ass cracks of the Constructicons and Wreck-Gar's uncanny resemblance to Weird Al!

[identity profile] oddityangel.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer it too...probably because I think G1* was actually pretty terrible (and I say that with a great deal of affection). I've liked almost every subsequent series better than G1, since they tend to be more consistent when it comes to characterization and story.

I agree that TF:A Megatron is one of the strongest versions of the character, I was actually pretty disappointed when I found out that the Megatron in Transformers Prime was going to be closer to G1 Megatron. I've gotten used to him, but TF:A Megatron is still, imho, the superior Megatron. I don't know if I prefer him over the Megatron in Beast Wars though...

*The cartoon. The comics are a different kettle of fish entirely

Who the hell didn't? It's up and down the better show.

[identity profile] straya.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I grew up on G1, so I'll always love it because it was the first TF series I ever watched, but if anyone asks which series I think are the better ones? I'll say Beast Wars and Transformers Animated every time. Neither are perfect, but I think both had better character development and more consistency than G1 ever did.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Animated's actually well-written and well-animated beyond its strict necessity as a half-hour toy commercial. G1 couldn't even keep the seekers in their proper colors.

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
TFA is what got me into the TF fandom and for that, I am grateful (though technically, my first exposure to it was Beast Wars).

[identity profile] tavalya-ra.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Found you!

If liking TFA is wrong, I don't want to be right. (But when has that not been true for me about anything?)

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Found you!"

OH YOU! XD

[identity profile] syntheticpoetic.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who grew up on G1 and has his own set of industrial grade nostalgia goggles firmly welded to his cranial unit, I think I get where you're coming from with this secret. A bit moreso than those who got into the series after, anyway. So trust me anon, when I tell you that the second you stop hanging out solely with purists who tell you it's in bad taste to like a series as fun as TFA is the second you will start being a healthier, happier person all around. Nostalgia goggles are meant to INCREASE our ability to enjoy things in life, not reduce it.

TFA is fun, quirky, and damn well written. Not to mention it really DOES have the most menacing Megatron. Embrace your love of it! JOIN THE COLLECTIVE. Our oil really is the best.

My own secret? I think Prime is far more stylistically off-putting than Chinimated (good name, btw), and I can't get into it at all.
