I know how you feel, I am super paranoid about online people because even in fandom where we're all supposed to be silly dorks brought together by some silly book/movie/tv show people can be just like OP and can be extremely judgmental about how others look (which in some cases might be projecting about either their own looks or just projecting because they have a crappy life.)

In some ways it's easier for me to make friends in person because even though I am shy, I don't feel that judgment as much in every day life.

Honestly, fandom people are, in my experience, a lot more obsessive and vindictive than your average douchebag stranger. :/

Never reveal your true identity, and even throw out a lot of fake information over the years.

Seriously. Fandom already takes a lot of dedication and obsession. So when folks in fandom want to be dicks, they can just use that same dedication and obsession to really make your life hell.

I think it pays to know the right people. There are a ton of douchebags in fandom. But I've met bunches of people who were wonderful, too, and I spent some really enjoyable days with them at various cons.

And yeah, one of them looked like a fashion model. The rest of us... not so much.

I would not hang with anyone who was vindictive.

Seconding this. Get to know your fandom friends and meet in a safe location, to be sure. But if you have talked with someone in depth every day for a year (without drama), chances are you know them just as well as any "IRL" friends.
