I think she was extremely well written. The way she dressed, the way she spoke, her general behavior, was all so distinct and infuriating. I hated her with every fiber of my being, but she was entertaining as hell. That's what I like about her.

same here! I HATED her. But I loved to hate her. And every scene she was in was amazing, imo.

She truly was a great character. She pretty much made OoTP for me, and seeing her get her comeuppance was more satisfying than seeing Voldemort die (imo).

She's definitely one of the best characters in HP, there's no doubt about that.

Yes! I feel like she's actually the most well-written antagonist in the entire series, and she causes pretty much nothing but seething, passionate anger in fandom no matter where she goes. And it's great because, not often is a villain recieved like that. I adored hating her, I really did. So, IA OP! Give her ALL the Best Character awards!

This. I think hating Umbridge may really be the only thing the entire Harry Potter fandom has in common. No matter what side of it, Harmonian or OBHWF-er, canon thumper or fanon junkie, Gryffindor or Slytherin fan, whether you think Draco is a leather-pants-wearing stud or a spineless ferret, whether you think Snape was sympathetic or just pathetic, whether you loved or hated the final two books, EVERYONE hates Umbridge. She is so perfectly despicable; mostly because I think the kind of person who reads something like Harry Potter in the first place has some seed of love for adventure and rebellion and she is the perfect horrible authority figure; the perfect target for such a rebellion. She's the kind of villain that one could meet in real life.
She's the perfect antagonist.

Don't use "ferret" as an insult. Ferrets are sweeties. :(

That is very true. Sorry, ferrets of the world!

lol, one of my friend's goals in life is to one day have a pet ferret, but her parents won't let her get one. One day she drew a picture of her future ferret and posted it on facebook, and our Draco fangirl friend comment "Draco?"
cool story, self.

I think she was amazing in terms of that I had an English teacher almost exactly like her in terms of mannerisms and anti-favorites (she had a distinct and personal loathing for me and about three other students in the class), and I've met many, many people who had similar experiences.

Honestly, I think the reason so many people have such a visceral reaction to Umbridge is she's only slightly exaggerated from real life- people like her exist and really do ruin kids' lives.

THIS.
When I was in 7th grade, the year after the OotP movie came out, with memories of Umbridge still fresh in my memory, I had a science teacher just like you described. She wasn't as bad as Umbridge, of course, but she came pretty damn close. We don't all face Dark Lords in our lives, but nearly everyone faces an Umbridge, and most likely she'll get away with her antics, and most likely she will ruin some lives, and it will all be just chalked up to "that's school; deal with it," and that is what makes her so absolutely terrifying.

MY UMBRIDGE WAS A SEVENTH GRADE TEACHER TOO but I was in seventh grade the year after the book came out, so that puts me several years older- still a weird coincidence though!

I remember several of us seriously trying to get our Umbridge fired because she was flunking students she personally disliked. Put some nice stains on my permanent record that made getting into higher education hell, too.

Ugh, I HATE teachers like that so much. I have immense respect for teachers who do their jobs well, but really, sometimes I feel like teachers can just get away with whatever they want, because most of the time, their only witnesses are children, who no one really listens to. I'm sorry you had to deal with someone like that.
