2. My ten-year-old desktop has a total of 70,651 files to be transferred to this new kid. Isn't that a lot?

(b) yes, that's over 7,000 per year
(c) no because a lot of it is probably temporary cache stuff, dumbass

I'm about to get a new computer and I am not looking forward to the file transfer

Or the fact that I will have to re-install ALL of my programs (especially since I'll be using a totally different OS, that's how old this fucking computer is)

I can sympathize. I dread the day when I need to replace my desktop (which, unfortunately, is coming up here pretty soon). It's behind by two OS upgrades that I know of, and the newest version of MS Office it has on it is from 2000.

2. Why not stick your old HDD in your new computer and make it a backup drive? I keep my OS on a separate partition from other files so I never have to transfer files like that.
