I agree with you! Even if it has a negative association in the book, it's just something to have to keep OP connected to the series throughout their life.

This. I mean, I was in a show a few years back where the set was basically this one house, and it was designed so there was a space big enough for two people under the stairs. I used to hang out there before entrances because I thought it was funny (as did the other Harry Potter nerds in the cast)

Yeah... I definitely thought of it as a special place for OP. One of my first thoughts was that I'd like to have one when I'm older too, so that my kids would be able to play Harry Potter with an actual cupboard. No abuse anywhere in there.
