Mostly what I've seen is people making valid criticism of some of the things he does and says, cognizant of the fact that his upbringing and backstory is really really screwy and so it's no wonder that sometimes he comes off as a jerk, and mostly they feel sorry for him.

And then I've seen other people brush in and start acting like noooo everything he does is totally sensible and justified and how dare you criticize him, you're just a blind Kotetsu fan who thinks he can do no wrong.

Personally, I like these characters, including both Barnaby and Kotetsu, because all of them are realistically imperfect and frequently do and say stupid/rude/self-absorbed things. I can still identify when they're being stupid/rude/self-absorbed without hating them.
