The deaths I'm talking about are Remus and Tonks. It's beyond stupid to go into a battle when you have an INFANT at home. I don't care how strongly you feel about fighting the baddies, you are PARENTS. One of you needs to stay home and take care of your damn kid. So, yes, even in the context of "there's a war on", their deaths (ok, one of them, anyway) were pointless because at least one of the should NOT HAVE BEEN THERE.

Seconding their deaths as pointless. It even goes beyond the "unbiased" and "pointless" nature of death - thematically it is suspect. For one, killing off Lupin is killing off the last of that generation. There is no storyteller, no one to pass down the wisdom learned from the wars as a collective, no one to act as a lookout for a future uprising, and no one to teach people about the mistakes that lead them there. It cuts off one part of the past from another, and especially cuts Harry off from his point of origin just as he's coming into himself.
Secondly, Teddy as a parallel for Harry is hastily drawn and problematic. Sure, we see a well-adjusted orphan, but it would have been just as meaningful, if not more meaningful to see a family that remained whole in spite of the war, or in reference to the victory of good triumphing over evil.
Thirdly, as it stands, the lesson of Remus' life is something along the lines of, never strive for happiness, because any effort at improving your lot will lead to your deserved suffering, or death.

This all on top of the fact that according to JK Rowling she only killed them because she couldn't bring herself to kill off Arthur in OotP. Apparently she was unaware that there was no kill quota to meet?

I know, cry moar. But it just really bugs me still! Wah, wah.

I agree with you. This thing bugs me too. They were pictured as being so happy with their son's birth but then decided to leave him to be an orphan? Even the war is not a good enough reason.
And I also had quite a reaction when I realized she killed all the Marauders. And when she killed Moody by pushing him off a broom. I kind of feel she's degrading her wonderfully created characters by killing them in such undignified way or for an undignified reason.
