Notes:

This is not your forum to identify and call out specific people just to call them assholes. Call out general actions you find reprehensible, mod ability/inability, that kind of stuff, but once you get into what basically amounts to 'this person is a stupid bitch and here are some icons/an lj layout/add. info to identify them with' - no.

See, I.. well, I like these movies. A lot. The fantastic costumes, the actors I love, the bromance turned up to ELEVEN, but. I love Sherlock Holmes and I find the source material to be absolutely brilliant, whereas when I look at this (these?) films as adaptations of Doyle's work I can't take them seriously. So I don't like the fact that some people may watch the movies and think the stories are HoYay in Print and all about getting into crazy fights and snarking all over the place-- not that those are bad things! Because I enjoy them! But, to me, that's just not Sherlock Holmes. And I know this probably sounds abolutely elitist or something to say, but I like watching these movies and mentally believeing they're about two Victorian bros who kick ass and solve mysteries in a fabulous matter, not watching them as Sherlock Holmes films.

/rant off and it probably doesn't make much sense but I feel like I can't explain what I mean properly

For what it's worth, I totally know what you mean. They are fun explodey snarky movies, but I have to sort of separate them from Sherlock Holmes in my head in order to enjoy them. (I kinda thought of the first one as "Victorian Iron Man".)

Victorian Iron Man?

I'm going to do this from now on. XD I agree with you both, too.

I love this concept. I oftentimes said this about Queen of the Damned: it was a pretty good vampire movie, it had sexiness and bloody bits and androgynous characters up the ying-yang. It sure as hell wasn't anything remotely related to the Vampire Chronicles, though, but it was fun outside of that respect.

I hear you loud and clear! I like some aspects of the movies but I can't ever consider them as true SH adaptions. They just don't come close to the way I've always thought of Holmes and Watson. I feel they should be more mentally engaging journeys, making the viewer think and try and match Holmes' thought process through the case. (We may disagree on that point though xD)

I was so excited to see the first film finally after I missed it in the cinemas, then I fell asleep about 40 minutes in and woke up at the credits. It didn't connect with me as a fan of the books, although a later re-watch trying to clear my mind of expectations I found if a fun piece of cinema...

This - I enjoyed the first one, and I'm glad it encouraged people to get into Holmes fandom (and grateful that it perhaps resulted in a bigger audience for the BBC's new 'Sherlock', which is far more faithful to the spirit of the books, IMO), but I honestly thought calling it 'Sherlock Holmes' at all was little more than a marketing ploy. It was fun, but it wasn't Holmes.
